After six years waiting for a model like this, here we have it, the wait has been worth it.

This is the Alfa Romeo Giulia SWB Zagato, the coupé version of the Alfa Romeo Giulia. And after six years waiting for a model like this, here we have it, the wait has been worth it. It is the work of bodybuilder Zagato, an Italian company that wanted to celebrate its 100-year relationship with Alfa with a unique model. A car that by the way already has an owner. Of course, the base is laid by an Alfa Romeo Giulia GTAm, the most radical of all.

The Alfa Romeo Giulia SWB Coupé is a two-seater with a two-door body and a 540 hp V6 engine. Alfa’s Head of Design himself, Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos, has helped with the project. The Alfa Romeo Giulia arrived in 2016 and since then many of its followers have been demanding a coupe version in the style of the Audi A5 or BMW 4 Series. Although the Italian brand has always been negative.

After six years, Zagato has made the dream of many come true. A job that started in 2021, just when the 100th anniversary of the first collaboration between the two Milan firms with the Alfa Tipo G1 was completed. There have been several models that have been presented, such as the Giulietta SZ from 1969, the Alfa SZ from 1989 and its roadster variant called RZ. The most recent is the 2010 Alfa Romeo TZ3 Stradale, a car of which only nine examples would be built.

In this case we will only have one unit, a single Alfa Romeo Giulia Coupé that will end up in a collector’s garage. We are talking about a lover of cars who has different Aston Martin and Alfa Romeos in his garage and who often drives the 1990 Alfa Romeo SZ. Zagato has been inspired by this model for his front part, taking the design of the Giulietta SZ Coda 1961 trunk for the rear.

Despite the fact that this Zagato model is based on the Giulia GTAm, which is only available with an automatic gearbox, this car has a manual gearbox, that of the first Giulia QV. This transmission must manage the powerful 2.9-liter V6 and 540 horsepower. An energy that is sent to the rear wheels.

“What our collaboration in the development of the design of this new Alfa Romeo Giulia SWB Zagato has achieved is to value the classic task of a coachbuilder like Zagato in today’s fast-paced automotive world to create a unique piece that meets the demands of passionate collectors. The relationship between Zagato and Alfa Romeo, together with the passion of the entire team of designers and engineers, demonstrates that the long tradition can continue into the future”, says Nori Harada, Vice President of Design at Zagato.
