At the beginning of the week we told you exclusively that the Movistar price increase already had a date. It will be from January 2023 when the new prices that mean paying a little more for the operator’s main products come into force. In addition, we also tell you that the informative letters, normally included in the invoice itself, would begin to reach customers at the end of November. Now, we give you the rest of the details of the blue operator’s price increase.

The operators in our country have been carrying out regular price increases for many years in a row in their most popular products, such as combined fiber and mobile rates. In most cases they respond to the launch of new modalities or to the improvement of existing ones. Unfortunately, in some cases prices are raised for nothing, which annoys customers even more.

In the case of Movistar, which occupies us in this article, the operator has been making increases continuously for 7 years. That is, since 2015 prices have been increasing. Of course, here we must clarify that Movistar has always opted for the “more for more” formula. It is true that the customer will pay more, but it is just as true that they will be offered some kind of improvement such as more gigabytes for browsing, more television channels or more speed in their fiber optic connection.

This is the rise of Movistar in January 2023

On this occasion, the operator will increase the prices of its convergent packages between 6% and 7% on average depending on the personalized offer that the customer has. Unlike other exercises where the rates could rise 3 or 5 euros per month in all the portfolio, the operator advocates a gradual rise always below the CPI that is justified by the increase in the costs of the sector (energy and others derived from the upturn of the CPI of the last year).

As it is not a linear increase, custom packages will have a variable increase. For example; MiMovistar Esencial with soccer will rise 5.6%, MiMovistar unlimited with essential and Netflix fiction will have a rise of 6.7%.

In general, the average increase will be 6.8% in all convergent offers, although there will be some packages that can increase their price up to a maximum of 8%. Other products such as mobile contracts or fixed broadband without television will not see their price altered. Nor will there be increases in O2 rates as confirmed by ADSLZone a few days ago. Finally, we can confirm that the welcome promotions will continue.

A sector with water up to its neck

We also do not want to downplay this price increase, but we do consider it fair to put everything in context. The telecommunications sector, especially if we talk about large companies, is deficient. The main companies, such as Movistar itself, but also Vodafone, Orange or the MásMóvil Group, have spent years investing money in our country to improve infrastructure without ever finding a way to ensure a return on that investment.

Both low-cost and OTT operators (Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max and company) take advantage of these infrastructures to develop their businesses. It is true that the MVNOs pay a price for the use of this network, but they also increase the commercial pressure with groundbreaking offers that are difficult to replicate by the large ones. In the case of OTTs, they do not pay anything for the use of the network, something that the large operators have been claiming for years.

As if that were not enough, now we have to add the scenario of uncertainty and skyrocketing inflation that we have. To the supply problems or the incessant rise in the price of electricity, we must add that we have inflation not seen for many years. Everything has exploded and companies must find the best formula to ensure their survival.
