Great result for the Spaniard in the second practice session.

When it seemed difficult that Fernando Alonso could improve the fifth position achieved in the first free practice of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the Asturian took a magnificent lap out of his pocket in Free Practice 2 with which he managed to get fourth in the streets of Baku. It will be difficult to maintain this position for the rest of the weekend…

But not impossible, because the Alpine A522 in Alonso’s hands looks set to finish in the top five. The Spaniard’s experience on this circuit, where he has ridden on two wheels and come back from the bottom of the grid in other years, could be the key to being up there again.

What you need to know about the Azerbaijan F1 GP 2022

The fastest in the afternoon was Charles Leclerc, who seems to be the favorite for pole position. The Monegasque (1:43.224) beat Sergio Pérez, leader at noon, by two tenths, and Max Verstappen by three. The Mexican is once again ahead of Max, who will surely soon try to hit the table to show who is the team leader; another thing is that he turns out well.

After Alonso, fourth, Carlos Sainz set the fifth best time, one second behind the leader and a few thousandths behind his compatriot. The normal thing is that tomorrow Sainz is ahead of Alonso, because he has a better pace that is not reflected in the time table as he got up on his best lap. Fernando can fight tomorrow for fifth place, which would make him the best of the rest.

In sixth place in Free Practice 2 we find Pierre Gasly, followed by George Russell (best Mercedes) and Yuki Tsunoda, eighth. Esteban Ocon, ninth, four tenths behind his teammate Alonso, and Lando Norris completed the top ten positions in this second testing session.

We did not find Lewis Hamilton in the ‘top 10’, whom we heard surprised when his engineer told him on the radio that, with a good lap, he was more than two seconds behind Leclerc. The rebound of his Mercedes makes it difficult for him to get good times and this afternoon he was only able to finish twelfth, three tenths behind Russell.

The F1 cars will return to the track tomorrow, first to complete the third and final free practice session. Later, at 4:00 p.m., the qualifying session will begin.
