Carlos Sainz, fifth in Miami after dreaming of the podium

Carlos Sainz started third and fought to finish in this position, but his Ferrari struggles in the race against Red Bull, Aston Martin and Mercedes in the race.

Carlos Sainz finished the Miami Grand Prix in fifth position, a result that may be known shortly after starting the race in third place. However, the Spaniard completed a good race, in which he fought Fernando Alonso and found himself virtually among the top three, but the Ferrari continues to feel inconsistent.

Sainz had a good start to the race in Miami, keeping Alonso’s pulse in the first few laps, holding on in the DRS zone to even be close to launching an attack on him. A few laps after being overtaken by Max Verstappen in his comeback, Carlos went into the pits to mount new, hard tires and undercut Alonso, a mission he accomplished.

The downside is that the pace of the Ferrari on the hard tire was not especially good on the lap, and this caused Alonso to come out of the pits close to Carlos, to overtake him a couple of laps later.

“We had a good stint with the medium tyre. I felt very good and it made me think that the podium was possible. We undercut (Fernando), but by stopping and doing two or three laps with the hard one, we ruined the rest of the race, because we started to downgrade. That shows that we have little flexibility with the car to do different things,” Sainz explained to DAZN F1.

“We suffered a lot with the consistency and with the overheating of the tire,” said Carlos. “We have to keep testing things, because we fought for pole position on Saturday but then on Sunday they slapped us in the race with Red Bull on another planet and Aston Martin with better degradation. The Mercedes also put us a few tenths in the race” .

The only ‘but’ that can be put to Sainz’s race is the mistake that the Spaniard made in his first and only pit stop, by exceeding the speed limit indicated at this point. This cost him a five-second penalty, which fortunately in the end did not mean he lost any position, after being overtaken by George Russell… and finishing with a good cushion on Lewis Hamilton.

“I went in last (to the pits). I was surprised by the little grip with the worn tyre, but in the end it didn’t affect me,” said Sainz.

Carlos’ race, with podium options, contrasted with that of his teammate, Charles Leclerc, who finished in seventh position after starting in the same position and finding himself trapped behind Kevin Magnussen’s Haas in the early part of the race.
