We have made a lightning trip to Paris to see the new Citroën C4 X for the first time, the new crossover-compact-fastback-family that the French firm will sell at the end of this year throughout the world.
Halfway between a C4 (link to the Citroën ë-C4 video test) and a C5 X (link to the Citroën C5 X video test), the C4 X seeks to win over those who want a car, with a crossover look and interior capacity of a 4-door saloon. It will be sold with 3-cylinder gasoline engines and in a 100% electric version, called e-C4 X.
Activity at Citroën is frenetic, ever since the Stellantis group was formed. Now it presents us with a new four-door sedan, ideal for those looking for a compact like the C4, but want more space in the rear seats and the trunk.
The Citroën C4 X measures 4.60 long, also halfway between a C4 and a C5 X.
It is sold with three-cylinder Puretech 100 and 130 petrol engines, with a 6-speed manual transmission or an 8-speed automatic transmission. And there is also a 100% electric version, the e-C4 X, with a 136 hp engine, an autonomy theoretical of up to 360 kilometers and the possibility of charging at 100 kW.
With a charger of this power, you can charge your battery up to 80% in 30 minutes. If a domestic single-phase plug is made, it takes 7.5 hours and 5 hours in a three-phase 11 kW.
A modified C4
The design is daring, as always in the French brand:
Starting from a Citroën C4, and with the line already seen in a C5 X, it has created an SUV with a fastback look and greater interior capacity than a C4, especially in the boot.
It mixes the proportions of a compact car, the look of an SUV and the rear of a 4-door fastback family, something that has been lost with the disappearance of sedans.
The car has been given length, for greater width in the rear seats, and a larger trunk. Although it shares the wheelbase with the C4, the platform is the same, the CMP.
It has a clear fastback line, with a window that extends to the trunk. The LED taillights, which extend towards the corners, are also curious. They can not miss the Airbump in the lower part of the doors, large wheels to increase the height of the car.
This is a car focused not only for Europe, but also for markets such as the Middle East and Africa. It wants to be an affordable alternative to 4-door sedans or similarly sized crossovers. It is an ideal car for fleets, taxis or VTC or even company drivers.
known interior
Its interior has a simple, familiar design, but it looks well finished, with a good sense of perceived quality.
There is a small digital instrument panel and a central screen that shows the menus of the MyDrive Plus infotainment system, already seen in the Citroën C5 X. The graphics are very visual, and the menus, based on widgets, can be managed by voice commands.
The dashboard is very functional, there are numerous holes and trays to place objects. The horizontal opening drawer that has been placed on the passenger side is curious, ideal for storing a Tablet. This Tablet can be held in a specific support that is just above.
In the center console there is no gear lever, at least in the electric version that I had the opportunity to analyze. We find the typical levers for the gears and the buttons for the driving modes or the electric parking brake, among others.
The coupé line of the car does not prevent there from being a good space in the rear seats. This is an aspect that Citroën has taken great care of, as part of its Advanced Comfort philosophy, which seeks the greatest driving comfort for passengers.
It seems in general that there is good width. The softness of the seats is very good, they are very comfortable, and a sunroof can be ordered that gives more light to these seats.
Regarding the trunk, if we compare it with that of a Citroën C4, the difference is remarkable. They are 510 liters of capacity: 130 liters more in the C4 X.
To increase comfort, this Citroën will be equipped with progressive hydraulic shock absorbers, a brand-specific technology that causes the “magic carpet” effect that Citroën likes to name so much.
We did not have more time to learn more about the details of this car, which was presented in Paris extremely briefly. I hope to have a unit as soon as possible to expand this information.
The new Citroën C4 X and e-C4 X are manufactured in Villaverde (Madrid) for the whole world, which once again demonstrates the importance of our automobile industry. It starts selling at the end of 2022.
