Dacia Spring, five virtues and two defects

Test of the Dacia Spring Electric 2021

AUTOBILD

The Dacia Spring represents the introduction of Dacia in the electric field and the Romanian brand has been faithful to its principles, presenting a reliable car with adjusted rates, affordable for everyone. These are its five virtues and its two defects.

one price for all

The firm promised an electric car for the people and it has fulfilled it, although it is not the cheapest EV on the market (title that corresponds to the Invicta Electric D2S), its price is really low: it is available from 18,105 euros, an amount that can be reduced to the 11,105 euros if they use the 7,000 euros of aid from the Moves III Plan.

Comparing it with its rivals, no one offers more for this amount and, although logically small in matters such as finishes and equipment, it surpasses more expensive models in aspects such as autonomy.

Interior space

The Spring is a fairly small model, even smaller than it may appear in images: it is only 3.73 meters long and its total weight is 970 kilos. It is framed within the urban models and, as such, its interior space is somewhat fair, although the Romanian manages to take advantage of it very well.

Its 290-liter trunk is above average and is expandable to 620 if the rear seats are folded down. In addition, another 23 liters are added, distributed in storage spaces throughout the cabin.

Standard equipment that meets

With such an affordable price, it does not have the most complete standard equipment you can imagine, but it does have everything that is essential and necessary.

The wheels are 14-inch steel, but the hubcaps hide it very well; It has climate control, radio, electric windows on all four doors, hill start assistant, LED daytime running lights, automatic emergency braking, six airbags, etc.

Of course, it is recommended, due to the existing price jump (1,500 euros), to make the jump to the superior finish, which adds elements such as the 7-inch central screen, the rear parking assistant or the exterior orange touches, which give it a more striking appearance.

Compatible with “fast” charges

Although it does not reach the levels of Porsche or Mercedes models, the humble Dacia is also compatible with fast charging stations, in its case with up to 50 kW of power, with which it recovers 184 kilometers of range in 50 minutes.

The Wallbox option is also recommended (7.4 kW, 3 hours and 42 minutes), but with lower power alternatives (either 3.7 kW or with a 2.3 kW domestic outlet) the process takes forever ( 11 hours and 25 minutes in the worst case to recharge those same 184 km).

An interesting urban autonomy…

The Dacia Spring uses a 27.4 kWh battery, which is not excessively large, but is well used, especially in urban areas, where it can reach up to 305 kilometers of autonomy, a figure that meets the standard weekly needs of someone who moves around the city exclusively.

Defect: … but scarce outside the city

But things change as soon as the city is left behind, since it becomes clear that the Spring has been conceived eminently as an urbanite and that outings from the city are better to be occasional. To begin with, its range of action decreases considerably in the mixed cycle: 230 kilometers.

In addition, its mechanics fall short in these situations: with only 45 hp, it “complies” in acceleration from 0 to 50 km/h (5.8 seconds), but it needs 19.1 seconds to reach 100 km/h from stopped, offering quite limited benefits.

Flaw: An austere interior

With such a tight price, superior interior quality cannot be expected either, being logical that hard-touch plastics abound everywhere, as well as that the cabin as a whole is quite simple and without fanfare.
