Six cases where overtaking is totally prohibited according to the DGT

As stated in the General Traffic Regulations in its article 87, it is forbidden to overtake “in curves and elevation changes with reduced visibility and, in general, in any place or circumstance in which the visibility available is not sufficient to be able to carry out the maneuver or desist from it once started.

And it continues: “Unless the two directions of traffic are clearly delimited and the maneuver can be carried out without invading the area reserved for the opposite direction.”

As usual, the General Directorate of Traffic has posted an infographic on Twitter under the hashtag #CeroRiesgos, in which it recalls six scenarios in which overtaking is prohibited, even without the sign that specifically prohibits it:

  • Curves or grade changes without visibility
  • level crossings
  • Behind an overtaking truck
  • Intersections and proximities
  • Crosswalks
  • tunnels

In addition to endangering your life and that of other road users, you run the risk of receiving a fine of 200 euros if you are caught overtaking in one of these cases, as it is considered a serious offence.

To this, it must be remembered that the speed limit can no longer be exceeded by 20 km/h since the new Traffic Law came into force.
