Ducati Ghost. the ghost of the future

Could this be the Borgo Panigale machine of the 21st century? Will the Ducati Ghost become a reality or will it just be a brief appearance, a mere illusion of what it could have been.

At the moment it is a dream that has taken shape from the hand of a mind… feverish or visionary?

It is not a new idea, but the application in this case of hybrid technology is still spectacular. And it all comes from the mind of a young Danish designer, Daniel Kemnitz, who has imagined and projected what could be the hybrid Ducati of the future.

In this case it is not a simple exercise in lucubration, if we pay a little attention we can find ideas with solid foundations, capable of being applied in a possible prototype.

To begin with, we find a double beam style frame with wide carbon fiber walls so that rigidity and lightness go hand in hand. In the front, it could not settle for a usual scheme and has opted for a Hossack-type suspension, with two rigid arms and a vertical shock absorber under the steering.

For the rear, our designer was inclined to mount a single-sided swingarm that is joined to the shock absorber by means of a swingarm structure formed by a tie rod with a rectangular section tubular structure.

The set of wheels does not escape originality either. The front uses a rim with thick asymmetrical spokes that fit two huge perimeter brake discs bitten by radial calipers. For its part, the rear rim shows a semi-lenticular design and seems to be designed in carbon.

two better than one

The Ducati Ghost lives up to its hybrid approach by mounting a pair of engines, each of a very different nature but perfectly integrated into its structure.

Kemnitz’s idea is that the two engines can work both separately and in unison and for this the combustion engine occupies the central part, fixed to the frame at the height of its cylinder head, while the electric one is situated as a continuation of this and it is embraced by the lower part of the chassis.

The explosion plant would be a 500 cc parallel twin-cylinder engine with 80 hp that would have the possibility of starting manually or coming to life automatically when reaching 80 km/h.

Its electrical partner would be a Brushless motor with almost 70 hp, so that when both worked together, the Ducati Ghost would reach 150 hp. Not bad.

The internal combustion engine would be powered by a small 10-liter tank located in what would become the saddle, while the electric one would be powered by a pair of batteries housed under the engine. Precisely behind them the two exhaust silencers would appear.

The transmission would be direct, single speed and with the electric motor connected to a crankshaft through shoes.

Led lights, TFT instrumentation and state-of-the-art electronics would finish off the set.
