Five cars without which BMW would not be what it is

BMW Isetta "The Little Escape"

BMW M1

Every car brand that has a certain history has a series of milestones in its history that have been key in its development. They can be technological advances, business movements… or, normally, distinguished cars that, for one reason or another, left their mark. In the case of BMW, these are the five cars without which it would not be what it is.

Go ahead, making this list has been tremendously complicated in this case, not because of the absence of icons, but precisely because of the large number of models that for one reason or another have

BMW 303

BMW 303

There are many characteristics that can define a brand: the type of cars it makes, the predilection for a specific type of engine… or its image. And it is precisely in this last field that the 303 was key for BMW: it was the first of its cars to show off its already unmistakable double kidney grille.

Logically it was a very primitive version, with huge vertically oriented and very rounded kidneys, but it laid the foundations for the design evolution that would come later and that, in recent times, has been reoriented again to increase its dimensions. In addition, it was the first with a 6-cylinder engine, another distinctive feature.

BMW Isetta

A priori, the Isetta is seen as a curiosity in the automotive world, a rare car, why not say so, and it is even hard to believe that it is a model that matches the style and values that BMW represents. However, it was a key model in its history, because the microcar arrived at a time of economic depression and saved the brand.

In the mid-1950s the manufacturer was almost bankrupt, a situation that the Isetta helped to overcome: its adjusted price, of only 2,550 marks, added to its versatility, made many Germans decide to buy it and it became a success of sales.

BMW 1500

BMW 1500

The case of the 1500 is similar, although with nuances. It was born in 1962, at a time when BMW was already making a comeback thanks to both the Isetta and the BMW 700, two affordable models. However, it was with the 1500 that the brand repositioned itself and regained the prestige it had lost.

Located in a medium market, it presented a modern design, a four-door saloon format from which most of its current models are heirs, with a certain focus on luxury, a fairly practical concept, capacity for five people, a large trunk and an 80 hp engine that moved him with ease. It was quite a hit.

BMW 3.0 CSL

BMW 3.0 CSL

Covered the models that were key in the survival of BMW and in the establishment of the basic characteristics of its normal range, it is time to turn our sights to the sports branch of the German house. The BMW 3.0 CSL was the first model developed by BMW Motorsport GmbH and was conceived to participate in the European Touring Car Championship.

The sports coupé had both competition and street versions, always with a design that caught the eye and with great emphasis on lightness: 1,165 kilos in the first and 1,270 kilos in the second.

Its engine, a six-cylinder in-line (how could it be otherwise), delivered 180 hp in its carbureted version and rose to 206 hp in the injection version; although in the competition versions it was prepared to even exceed 480 hp.

BMW M1

The presence of the M1 on the list is due to multiple factors, the two key ones being the fact that, although BMW Motorsport GmbH had been in operation for some time, it was not until this model that the first car sporting the ‘M’ was created. his name and street address; and the fact that to date it is the first and only supercar in the brand’s history.

Its design has now become iconic, as well as an unprecedented mechanical configuration before and after in the company’s history: rear central engine, specifically a 3.5 six-cylinder block that develops 273 hp.
