The thousands of Spanish fans who have witnessed Free Practice 1 of the Formula 1 Spanish GP have not been able to enjoy the great results of Fernando Alonso or Carlos Sainz in the first test session… although for now they are just that: the first training. The life of Max Verstappen, however, does not change: the Dutchman has led in the first outing on the track.
The first test session of the Spanish Grand Prix has been marked by somewhat strange results. We are not referring to the first and second position of Max Verstappen and Sergio Pérez, the undisputed leaders at this start of the championship, but to the rest.
And it is that in the ‘top 10’ we find cars like AlphaTauri, Haas or Alpine… ahead of Ferrari, Aston Martin and Mercedes!
The fastest time on a Circuit where the arrival of rain threatened was that of Max Verstappen, with a 1:14.606 with which he beat his teammate, Sergio Pérez, by more than seven tenths. From here, the surprises begin.
Esteban Ocon, who has just finished on the podium in Monaco, was eight tenths behind Max, and a surprising Nyck de Vries – who has not even scored a point this year – was fourth.
Pierre Gasly, the second driver behind the wheel of the Alpine, closed the top five positions ahead of Fernando Alonso, the car on which the most fans’ eyes have been fixed during this session. The Spaniard, probably with more fuel in his car, finished nine tenths behind Verstappen.
After Alonso, Kevin Magnussen stopped the timer, another surprise, after beating the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, the other local driver on the track. George Russell, the best Mercedes, completed the ‘top 10’, followed by Lando Norris and his teammate Lewis Hamilton.
It was a free practice session without incident, apart from a ‘light’ touch between Pierre Gasly and Logan Sargeant at the end of the hour of testing that ended without consequences.
The F1 cars will return to the track at 5:00 p.m. for the start of second free practice, where we will have more data on the actual performance of the cars… if it doesn’t rain, which could happen given how dark it is Heaven was at the end of the first free practice.
