Watching TV on the Internet has many advantages and has become an option for many people who do not depend on the antenna to access their favorite channels. There are all kinds of applications and websites that allow us to do it, although the different channels continue to broadcast on DTT… but, all of them? The BBC has announced that it will go completely to streaming in a few years, it will only broadcast online.

The BBC has announced that it will say goodbye to DTT or digital terrestrial television. This is not an immediate bet, but rather the UK channel has announced that it will be in 2030 when it will completely abandon this medium and will broadcast only on the Internet.

Public television in the United Kingdom is one of the oldest, one of the great classics. But he wants to show that the whole country has modernized and will continue to modernize. The general director of the channel has given a speech in which he indicates that by that year access to fiber and fixed broadband must be guaranteed for the majority of the population, so the BBC could only broadcast over the Internet.

Is it an option in Spain?

Broadcasting only over the Internet has some problems, the main one being that all users must have access to fixed broadband networks in order to access this. Especially important if it is about public television, as is the case of the BBC… In addition, this proposal is totally opposite to what Europe wants: television can exclusively use radio waves until 2030 although there is no date exact and mandatory and would depend on strings.

Although it may be an option in the medium or long term, it is not being considered for now, although there are groups or chains that are committed to a hybrid option for content.

What advantages does it have?

Watching television over the Internet offers us more quality and that is the main advantage that we get by betting on this method. Why? There is a limitation of bandwidth in the channels used by DTT and television over the Internet, offered by the different operators already in Spain, does not have these limitations. We can get up to 12 or 13 Mbps in HD channels over the Internet, data more than two or three times higher than what DTT channels would offer us.

Of course, there are also drawbacks and problems… The main problem currently is that not all homes have an internet connection. Although we can see this as something unusual, it happens. There is no fixed broadband coverage or simply not everyone has the required installation. In addition, it costs more money: we can watch DTT from anywhere without paying for it month by month and beyond what you pay for electricity when you turn on the television, but we must pay the operator for the fixed Internet connection.

Therefore, in the event that all the channels decide to bet on broadcasting only in streaming, they should ensure that everyone has access. Although it is still a long-term movement and there are seven years left for the BBC to pass, so we must wait to find out about the progress in Europe, the changes and the decisions of the channels that consider which is the best.

Meanwhile, there are many channels that we can see through the Internet but without closing the option of doing it through DTT and in a conventional way.
