Red Bull returns to the lead with Max Verstappen in the second free practice session of the Miami GP.
After the mirage that was the leadership of Mercedes in the first practice session of the Miami F1 GP, in the second the favorite has returned to the first position. The Red Bull team and last year’s winner, Max Verstappen, dominated Free Practice 2, beating Carlos Sainz and Sergio Pérez. Ferrari seems to be doing better than expected and, according to Marc Gené, they are reserving an engine.
Verstappen led the second practice sessions for the Miami GP with a time of 1:27.930, with which the Dutch driver beat Carlos Sainz by three tenths, who, on this circuit, has regained confidence in the Italian car and has been the fastest of those in Maranello this afternoon.
His teammate, Leclerc, finished with the third fastest time, but he did not get rid of problems, since with ten minutes to go in the session he collided with the barriers, causing a red flag. Despite this setback, it is clear that Ferrari has pace this weekend. We don’t know if it’s enough to fight with Red Bull, but yes to be the second team.
Not surprisingly, Marc Gené, Ferrari test driver, commented on DAZN that they are reserving engines on Fridays. Although we do not know how other teams do it, it seems that the Italian team still has some margin.
Sergio Pérez was fourth fastest, again one step behind Verstappen, and Fernando Alonso completed the top five positions, seven tenths off the leader of the standings. The Spaniard once again overtook the Mercedes, who led Free Practice 1 in this session: Hamilton was seventh and Russell, who was not at all comfortable with the car, was fifteenth.
