These are places where numerous accidents have occurred and the residents of the area have requested the installation of these devices through suggestions or complaints.
How the traffic light radars work in Madrid
They are easily recognizable with the naked eye, since they have a support that crosses the street about 25 meters before. A sensor and a camera that records the passage of vehicles are placed on said support. For the complaint to be valid, the photograph must capture the exact moment in which the driver commits the offence.
All the steps with photo-red control are announced by specific signage before reaching the control equipment support. Each installation has an infrared camera that allows capturing the license plate of the vehicle day and night.
In addition, each facility has a color camera that takes five photographs of the vehicle crossing, in which the brand, model and color of the vehicle can be distinguished, as well as the license plate.
Therefore, they are only capable of penalizing those vehicles that have license plates, including cars, vans, trucks, buses, motorcycles, and mopeds.
Pedestrians and cyclists are not caught with this type of system, although in specific areas controls are carried out by the Municipal Police and Mobility Agents

Fine of 200 euros and 4 points on the card
It is convenient to know the location of the traffic light cameras in Madrid, since the fine for skipping them can be high. This infraction is punishable by 200 euros and the withdrawal of four points from the card, although it is reduced to 100 euros for early payment (20 days from the receipt of the notification).
Reporting bulletins for running a photo-red traffic light include two photographs from the moment of the violation as evidence, one before and one after the stop line.
