The Photoshop image editing program offers us a wide variety of tools to get the most out of our creations. Sometimes, editing a certain photograph or image we want to capture its best angles and the time in which it is presented is an important factor.

What can be obtained with a day image is not the same as with a night image, the elements and tones change. For this reason, in the following guide we will explain how to convert a day photo to a night photo with Photoshop.

How to convert a day photo to a night photo in Photoshop

First of all, to carry out the following steps we have to choose a photograph or daytime image which we want to convert into a night photo. And then, the way to proceed for this conversion requires, of course, having downloaded the Photoshop program from its official page.

Step 1. Darken

We start by taking our daytime image already chosen and the layer will be duplicated following the commands Ctrl + J – Command + J. Once that is done, we proceed to right click on the duplicated layer and click on “Convert to Smart Object”. Knowing how to use smart objects is useful because they allow us to modify the arrangements that are going to be made next.

So you are going to follow the next steps to apply the night effect: “Image>Adjustments>Curves…” (Ctrl+M-Command+M) and then lower the exposure of the layer by applying: “Image>Adjustments>Exposure.. .”.

Next you must apply certain simple adjustments with respect to the curves and they are the ones that we will detail below:

  • There is a channel called RGB and there you have to move the three points behind the diagonal.
  • The red and green channel make sure to lower them further to the right side about halfway.
  • As for the blue channel, you leave it as it is.

Step 2. Lighting

Later, we are going to duplicate the original layer again (Ctrl + J – Command + J) and then we must convert it back to a smart object. Next, we move the newly made layer, well above the one that is darkened, to work on the lights in our photo.

So, to apply the above you have to follow the path: “Image> Adjustments> Curves…” (Ctrl + M – Command + M). In addition, you have to control the brightness of the layer, increasing it by pressing the options: “Image> Adjustments> Brightness / contrast”.

Also, you have to configure the curves in this step as in the previous one and you are going to leave it as follows:

  • With the RGB, green and red channels you don’t have to do anything, just leave them as they are.
  • As for the blue channel, you have to identify the midpoint of the diagonal and that it remains low, in order to give the photograph a yellowish tone.

Step 3. The Layer Mask

If you already know how a layer mask works, you are going to add one to the newly made highlight layer until it is completely covered. And to execute this step you must Alt + Click – Option + Click on the layer mask icon.

Finally, you choose a brush with 0% hardness, white and an opacity of 20% to draw on our image the part that we want to see with light. And if you prefer, you can use the best brushes in Photoshop for better results when you want to apply the aforementioned.

As final points…

If you see that in the image you intend to place concentrated light only in a certain part, it is necessary to use the diagonal lasso (L) to define those places. Also, to give it a more real touch, the typical one of the nights, you can add stars using a small, white and low hardness brush.

Additionally, there are other elements that you can insert such as the moon, which you must download and cut out its background, previously, to incorporate it into your image. And to decrease its size you can press Ctrl + shift key and position the image where you want in your photo.

Now you know how to convert a day photo to a night photo in Photoshop, and what remains is for you to put what you have learned into practice. Success!
