Adobe InDesign is a widely used tool when it comes to improving the style of a work, so more than once it is necessary to convert a Word document to insert or improve its attributes.

Currently, the program created by Microsoft is one of the most used when it comes to transcribing and interpreting texts. Performing this type of import is more common than it seems.

Many designers or editors tend to use InDesign in its latest version, when it comes to modifying the visual characteristics of a document, but its relationship with respect to transcription goes much further.

Today many customers want their document or text file to be significantly improved, but without losing any of its qualities. This is important when converting a document that comes from the Microsoft program.

Although neither of the two programs has the option to export files with the extension of the other, the conversion or import is not a problem.

Add the file to Adobe InDesign

Once the contents of Word are imported into InDesign, some elements of the document lose their functionality. They cannot be edited or do not receive any modification in exchange for needing to add or remove content.

Therefore, once the Word document is saved with all its specifications correctly defined, the import process begins. The advantage of Word documents is that they can be converted into many formats, including conversion to JPG and PNG format.

Add the file to Adobe InDesign

  • One way to accomplish this is by creating a new document within the InDesign program. This must be completely blank and with the number of pages similar to those occupied by the Word document.
  • Within that same space, leave a text box open. Which you can do using the tool that bears the same name.
  • Through the “File” tab, whose menu has the “Location” option. You’ll need to tap to select the text file you just saved.
  • After converting a Word document so that its text is part of the file in InDesign, you’ll be able to adjust the box you left open earlier to the proper dimension. So that it covers the entire content of said file.
  • Now it will only be necessary to add the characteristic editions of the Adobe program. Since the conversion has been completed, and it only remains to modify the document according to your taste.

InDesign import options when converting a Word document

When the file is being opened in the blank sheet of the editor program, a series of options appears in the import menu that will help you maintain the fidelity of the document.

The options are presented as a small window that contains a series of attributes. With the purpose that the user can choose the configuration that best suits him when importing the document.

From top to bottom they can be defined as follows: the first is called “Adjustment”. This allows you to define, modify or save the configurations to reuse them at another time.

The next one, called “Include” takes care of keeping the text format of the tables, the footer, the index and the notes at the end of the page.

The “Use of smart quotes” ensures that the program detects the opening and closing of quotes. Working in the same way that the document does.

Regarding the format box, it is in charge of the aspects that make up the personalization of the document and the text. In case you need to remove editing from Word, you want to keep or import some custom style.

Once the editing of these settings is finished, they can be saved through the “Accept” button. The program will automatically proceed to convert a Word document to an InDesign text, with the elements that were chosen within the menu. Allowing you to continue editing all your content in a more comfortable way.

On the other hand, if your document is a notepad in TXT format, you can convert it to Word and then convert it to an InDesign document.
