Excel is a tool that allows users to quickly work on spreadsheets, it has several functions. For this reason, it is important to learn to use Microsoft Office for free online, because that way we can use Excel properly.
On the other hand, it should be noted that ATAN2 allows knowing the alpha angle of a certain triangle that forms the X and Y coordinates of a point in the Cartesian plane. Likewise, the ATAN2 function is part of Excel’s trigonometry and math functions.
How to use ATAN2 function in Excel?
The ATAN2 function is used to return the arc tangent of the “X and Y” coordinates. It should also be noted that the function syntax has two arguments that are required.
So the arguments are: coord X which corresponds to the “X coordinate” of the point and the coord. Y which corresponds to the “Y coordinate”. By means of the ATAN2 function it is possible to calculate the tangent arcs of an angle.
For this reason, the X and Y coordinates of a point in the Cartesian plane will be calculated, for example: there is a Cartesian plane where the point is defined by the letter X number 3 and the Y coordinate number 2. So it can be written in separate cells the following:
- 113 X-coordinate: 3
- 114 Y Coordinate: 2
Then, with the arc tangent or Atan2 function, you can call the function: =atan2(B113;B114), since the cell corresponding to the coordinate, which in this case would be B, must be added. Then the Enter key is pressed to get the result of the value of the angle measured in radians.
The result would be: 116 Atan2 =a=. Likewise, the same value can be expressed but multiplying said value by 180 and dividing by the number “pi” that is obtained by means of the “pi function” and it would be: =B116*180/pi() at the end the result will be: 33 .690068 which is the value of the angle but measured in degrees.
Another formula to obtain the degree of the function is by means of the formula called degrees, in which the angle value in radians is selected as the angle argument and enter is pressed. The formula would be: =degrees(B116) and pressing enter would give the same result: 33.690068.
Excel: Easily use the ATAN function
In Excel the atan function returns the arctangent of a number and the value of the angle is expressed in radians and the syntax has a mandatory argument known as a number. Which corresponds to the tangent of the desired angle.
So the tangent function of an angle alpha is defined as the ratio of the opposite leg divided by the adjacent leg. Therefore, the leg that is at the opposite end of the angle that is being calculated would be: “a”, for the leg that is being calculated, which in this case would be: “B”.
What is being done by means of the atan function is to calculate the value of the alpha angle when the value of the tangent of said angle is known.
Therefore, when the value of the tangent is known, it is defined by the opposite leg, which in this case would be. 6.245 divided by the adjacent which in this case would be: 5 would return the value of the tangent of the alpha angle and the result would be: 1.249.
Through the arc tangent function, calling the atan function, the value of the alpha angle will be calculated, when the tangent of said angle is known. So the value of the angle is selected and the formula would be:
- tan a= 1,249
- a= =atan(B98)
And pressing enter would result in: 0.895665, this value is the value of the angle measured in radians. Note that B98 is the cell that is being worked on “tan a=”; so in the formula the cell in which it is located is added. There is a correlation between the angle alpha and the tangent of the angle.
Finally, it should be mentioned that thanks to the Excel program we can currently do multiple actions. Among which are included the creation of daily agendas, creating budget sheets, among other relevant things.
