Hydrogen Vehicle Systems (HVS) will present a new hydrogen commercial vehicle with a 600 km range at the Birmingham Commercial Vehicles show.
One of the most interesting applications for hydrogen as a fuel is that of trucks and heavy transport vehicles, a sector where the electric car is arriving at a slower rate due to the difficulties posed by this type of vehicle. Currently there are several companies working on the development of different technologies for commercial vehicles.
One of these companies is Hydrogen Vehicle Systems (VHS), a UK-based company that was founded in 2017 and is dedicated to the design and production of alternative propulsion systems. The company will present a new hydrogen commercial vehicle with 600 km of autonomy at the Birmingham Commercial Vehicles fair, an event that will be held on April 18.
HVS will present a new commercial hydrogen vehicle with a range of 600 km
Described as a “next-generation heavy vehicle with hydrogen and zero emissions”, the truck, an articulated tractor, will have a range of up to 600 kilometers, depending on the load and the route, and will offer a refueling time of between 15 and 20 minutes.
The propulsion system that HVS will present in Birmingham in a few weeks uses a hydrogen fuel cell and energy storage system to send electricity to an electric motor that transmits power to the vehicle’s wheels. It also features a Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) to recover energy during braking and deceleration.
According to the company, the new powertrain “contributes to achieving a total cost of ownership comparable to current diesel-powered offerings on the market.”
On the other hand, HVS notes that the hydrogen fuel cell “allows for longer range, higher charging capacity, and faster refueling than would be possible using battery-electric technology alone.” In addition, like other cars with a hydrogen cell, only water vapor free of polluting particles is emitted from its exhaust system.
