The well-known Spanish operator becomes the first telephone company to activate IPv6 in its mobile network. In this way, it is possible to give a vital advantage over other users of other operators. More than anything, because the access for clients to native content under this Internet protocol will improve speed, security and mobility.

In addition, Movistar has already achieved 600,000 accesses over IPv6 and, in this way, reinforces its commitment to always be able to offer users the best technological innovations in networks and services. Note that this functionality does not have to be activated by users or requested.

IPv6 in the Movistar mobile network

The Spanish operator, Movistar, has begun to deploy IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6), also known as Internet Protocol version 6, in its mobile network. Therefore, it is achieved that, when a smartphone establishes a connection with the operator’s mobile network to access the Internet, then it will receive both the traditional IPv4 address and the new IPv6.

With this novelty, Movistar thus becomes the first operator in our country to address the Internet traffic of all its mobile rate customers with IPv6. Right now, as reflected in the operator’s data, they already have 600,000 accesses under this protocol. However, they plan that the full deployment can be completed during the first quarter of 2023.

What is IPv6

It must be taken into account that this function is totally transparent for Movistar users. Therefore, you do not have to contract anything at all or request its activation on the operator’s mobile line. It’s automatic. Also, in the times we live in, it is rare to find a smartphone that does not support this Internet protocol. Of course, it is available for Android and not for iPhones, since in Movistar they point out that “throughout 2023 it will also be available for iOS”.

In addition, any user who wants to voluntarily deactivate it from their mobile devices can do so from their phone settings. And it is worth mentioning that there is also a way to know if we access the contents with IPv4 or IPv6: from a page that shows the IP as it can be What Is My IP?or through the IPv6 test page.

What are the advantages of using IPv6?

One of the main benefits of using IPv6 is that it achieves greater speed of access to what is known as ‘hyperscalars’ (Google, Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, etc.), which offer content in IPv6. Although, it is not the only advantage that those mobile users who are directed over this Internet protocol have.

Movistar makes it clear that this protocol comes with “security and mobility improvements, which will allow the development of new connectivity services and advanced solutions for the home based on IPv6”. Therefore, once again, the blue operator continues to bet on technological innovations with which they continue to offer a better service to all their customers.
