Movistar makes available to its customers the possibility of purchasing refurbished mobiles, but is it a type of device that you can trust? Or are you going to find a phone that does not work well, that suffers problems after a few months of use or even has scratches?

In these times, saving is a priority for all people. And that may be what leads you to consider the acquisition of a refurbished mobile. But surely the simple term “refurbished” suggests something that is not right, or at least not new. That is the first thing that raises doubts about whether it will be better to save a little by buying one of these mobiles or if, in fact, it is better to go to the new device from the factory as we have always done. What should Movistar customers take into account?

What is a refurbished mobile?

The RAE says that “reconditioning” means “reconditioning”. And, for more precision, he adds that it is “to prepare something in a proper way.” With that, the concept may be more or less clear to you, but it is difficult to imagine the type of process through which a refurbished mobile has gone.

The first thing you have to know is that a mobile that has been reconditioned has received treatment so that it can be sold in a decent way. In other words, it is not a phone that has passed from the hands of user 1 to Movistar and that Movistar then puts in the hands of user 2 without having made any type of change. Therefore, a refurbished mobile is indeed a second-hand device, but moving away from that second-hand concept to which we are accustomed.

To make it clearer, take note of what actually happens when a mobile is reconditioned by Movistar. The first thing is that user 1, who can be a company, a store or even a subscriber who had the device on loan in some way, sends the mobile to Movistar to get rid of it. At that moment, the reconditioning process begins, in which the work of a series of specialists first takes place, testing the terminal and its functions. This is the first sieve. Movistar verifies that the mobile works, that it can make calls, receive them, that there is a good sound, that the WiFi is connected and that, in general, nothing is wrong.

If a terminal fails in the review carried out by specialists, they have to take care of fixing the components that are broken or damaged. Sometimes Movistar is not compensated to fix the device. Imagine that the mobile that has come into your hands has a broken screen, that the internal memory is giving you problems, or that three or four other things happen to it. The repair would be unfeasible to later sell it at a reasonable price. Therefore, the mobile does not enter the reconditioned catalog, but is recycled following the usual procedures. But if you only have to make an adjustment that is within Movistar’s standards, it can be fixed.

Before repairs, when it has been confirmed that the mobile is suitable for reconditioning, what the Movistar team does is thoroughly clean the terminal. It has to be neat and, as far as possible, look like new. Luckily, they have enough tools and knowledge for it.

Then, when it’s been inspected, cleaned and repaired, it’s time to “dress up” the phone so that it looks as close as possible to when it first came out of the box. Sometimes this is possible to a greater or lesser extent, which is why Movistar has two categories of refurbished mobiles: Grade A and Grade B. Keep reading and we’ll talk about them.

The two degrees of reconditioning of Movistar

There is no need to fool anyone, the first time you buy a refurbished you have a certain fear and the fly a little behind your ear. You think if you will have done well and if in the end it will be a master move or if the decision will turn out to be a frog. One of the aspects that can help you be a little calmer is to opt for a mobile that fits into the Movistar Grade A category.

Grade A mobiles are those that are pristine. Movistar affirms that they are “in perfect cosmetic condition”. An adjective like “perfect” is not used lightly, especially when the operator knows that customers could complain if they were disappointed with the product. To go a little further, what you can expect is a terminal that does not have any visible scratches, neither on the chassis nor on the screen.

In the case of Grade B mobiles, Movistar indicates that they are “in very good cosmetic condition.” The screen will never have a scratch, but on the chassis you could find what the operator claims are “light scratches”. Of course, they have neither breaks nor blows, but you can expect some scratches on the structure that will not affect performance, but rather aesthetics (it will be seen that it is not totally new).

And the battery? For both types of degree, the operator guarantees that the mobile you will receive will have at least 85% of its capacity operational. Keep in mind that this implies that some terminals could reach your hands with a battery of 90%, 95% or another figure, but always with a minimum of 85%.

So do I trust?

On paper, everything is quite reasonable. Now, you should keep several things in mind. First of all is the level of discount that you will enjoy for the acquisition of the refurbished mobile. With each terminal it is different and sometimes it may not be enough to consider this option. You should also take into account how current the device is and the projection that it will have in terms of receiving future updates. Although Movistar does not usually have very old refurbished ones, it never hurts to check it out.

On a day-to-day basis, the truth is that you will not notice anything. Using a refurbished device is the same as using a new device, because after all, it’s not like you’re wearing used sneakers. Of course, if you like to brand new the mobile with its factory box, its labels and plastic, get used to the idea that the reconditioned terminals are sent with a packaging that does not have to correspond to the manufacturer’s original. What you will receive completely new and even sealed are the cables and the charger. So it’s a joy because, even with a reconditioning, you’ll have something brand new!
