Opel Astra Sportstourer: Same, but more capable

Opel has launched the Sportstourer version of the Astra that we have already been able to drive around the factory in Rüsselsheim (Germany) where it is manufactured. Longer and with more wheelbase than the 5-door saloon, this break adds the practicality and trunk volume usual in this type of car and slightly more space in the rear seats. It will arrive in Spain at the end of 2022 with gasoline, diesel and plug-in hybrid engines at prices that have not yet been confirmed.

The Opel Astra Sportstourer is identical to the saloon right up to the tailgate and inherits the same taillights.

The new Opel Astra Sportstourer measures 4.64 meters long by 1.48 meters high and has a wheelbase of 2.73 meters. It is, therefore, longer than the 5-door sedan (almost 27 cm) and has a 5.7 cm longer wheelbase, which translates into more space for the rear seats since the rear bench seat is slightly lower. more retarded.

Aesthetically it is almost identical to the sedan. At the front there is no change and it maintains the front with the closed black grille and the same headlight and bumper design, while at the rear it uses the same lights as the sedan and the only important difference is that the number plate square it goes from the bumper, which is where the sedan takes it, to the center of the tailgate. The reason is none other than, in the Estate, the load sill and, therefore, the opening of the tailgate, are lowered in relation to the sedan, to facilitate loading and to bring the loading plane flush with the sill itself.

The Opel Astra Sportstourer goes up to 4.64 meters long, almost 27 cm more than the 5-door saloon.

By jointly developing both bodies, not only have the same lights been used, but also the doors are the same, both the front ones (something common in these cars) and the rear ones, since the increase in the wheelbase is seen in the space left between the rear door and the rear wheel arch. Obviously, the profile changes, since the family is longer and has a more vertical rear window and tailgate to make the most of the interior space.

597 liter trunk for the Astra Sportstourer

The trunk is the great protagonist of this version. It has a capacity of 597 liters and is square as it measures 103 cm both in width and depth. If the second row of seats, whose backrest is split in a 40/20/40 ratio, is folded down, a capacity of 1,634 liters and a loading length of 1.85 meters are achieved. The opening of the gate can be electric and operated with the foot by passing it under the bumper.

The trunk of the Opel Astra Sportstourer has a capacity of 597 liters as we see in this image.

The boot is equipped with a luggage-cover blind and a rigid floor that can be placed at two heights, either flush with the load sill or lower, eliminating the double bottom. In this double bottom, by the way, there is a specific place to store the luggage cover when we need to use the capacity up to the ceiling. Also worth noting is the possibility of placing the false floor diagonally to compartmentalize the trunk. This one, by the way, is carpeted, has shopping hooks and an interior light. The plug-in hybrid version lacks the full double bottom, but retains a space under the floor for the charging cable.

Opel will market numerous accessories to personalize this family or to provide it with greater functionality and announces a range of roof boxes, bicycle racks and bars and transport accessories for the roof as well as a tow hook and some customizable bodywork elements such as mirror housings and the tires.

There are no differences between the passenger compartment of the Opel Astra Sportstourer and the one we already knew in the sedan.

The dashboard design is identical to that of the sedan, with the two digital screens behind continuous glass and the equipment, including the infotainment system, with customizable widgets and wireless mobile connection and charging, is also the same. Opel will offer it in three finishes, Elegance, GS Line, with a sportier character and with specifically designed bumpers, and Ultimate, the most equipped. Among the options, the AGR-certified seats with heating, ventilation, massage and leather upholstery and the Intelli-Lux lighting system in its latest evolution with LEDs with up to 168 elements.

Opel Spain has not confirmed the Spanish range or its prices, although it is most likely that it will simply double the existing 5-door with the same combinations of engines and finishes.

Already known engines

The Opel Astra Sportstourer range comprises four engines (two petrol, one diesel and one PHEV) and three different finishes.

The range of engines includes, in gasoline, two versions of the 1.2 three-cylinder with 110 and 130 hp, the first only with manual transmission and the most powerful with manual or automatic transmission. In the diesel section there will be two versions of the 130 hp 1.5 engine, also with the two types of change and the 180 hp plug-in hybrid version will close the range above (the one we tested in the saloon in this video). This car is capable of traveling up to 60 km (72 in the city) in 100% electric mode, recharges in less than two hours and has an approved consumption for the first 100 kilometers of 1.2 l/100 km.

In our first contact, we tested the three existing versions (petrol 130, diesel 130 and PHEV 180), always with automatic transmission in the surroundings of the Rüsselsheim plant and in heavy traffic conditions, both on the road and on the highway. We were not able to verify, for example, the chassis adapted to the high speed that the brand promises and we did not think there were changes in behavior on what we told you in the test of the sedan version that we tested in Lisbon in the video that we have shown you. left linked.

As comfortable as it is efficient, the Opel Astra Sportstourer has one of its virtues in its dynamic behaviour.

The three engines work very smoothly, including the diesel, whose purr is very well isolated and the behavior is satisfactory, with a point of hardness of the suspension that does not affect comfort at all and that perfectly contains the car’s rocking. The rear suspension, somewhat stiffer than that of the sedan, due to having to deal with hypothetical higher loads, is usually a plus in dynamic behavior, but we could not verify it either as the tours are short and not demanding at all. We will wait, therefore, to have test units in Spain to refine the verdict.
