Opel Insignia 2020

Opel will stop manufacturing the Insignia at the end of 2022 to make way for new electrified compact models at its factory located in Rüsselsheim.

Sedans are going through a difficult time in the market. The SUV offensive is causing this type of vehicle to lose ground by leaps and bounds and this, inevitably, claims some victims along the way. Opel will stop manufacturing the Insignia at the end of 2022 to make way for new electrified compact models at its factory located in Rüsselsheim.

The news has been released shortly after Vauxhall, the brand under which Opel sells its models in the British market, stopped marketing the Insignia. Luckily for those of us who still believe in sedans, this doesn’t spell the demise of the Opel Insignia, as the lightning bolt signature has an electrified successor on the way.

A spokesman for the German firm confirmed the Insignia’s production cessation to Business Insider. “As a result of the CO2 emissions regulations and the focus on rapidly accelerating the three new multi-energy models in Rüsselsheim, production of the Insignia will be phased out this year.”

The spokesman also commented that there will be a generational successor: “We are working hard on the successor to the Insignia, which will be electrified.” He also spoke about the future of the German manufacturer’s range: “Opel is promoting the change to a purely electric brand by 2028 and they are preparing the market launch of several latest-generation electric models.”

The successor to the current Insignia is expected to debut in 2024 or 2025. The model could adopt a fastback crossover body style, similar to the Citroën C5 X and the recently introduced Peugeot 408. This decision would be made with the aim of attracting buyers who want the practicality of an SUV, but prefer a more streamlined silhouette.

The current Opel Insignia was launched on the market in 2016 and was updated three years later, in 2019. It is available in a five-door saloon body and in a family called Sports Tourer, from which the Country Tourer camperized version derives.
