An SUV or crossover type model is an option that is on the minds of the vast majority of customers, and the list of names is endless. Among them, the new Peugeot 408 and the also new Renault Austral sneak in, two models that will give something to talk about in the coming months.
Peugeot 408
The new Peugeot 408 is a crossover. Its body is of the coupe type, a body that measures 4,687 mm long, 1,859 mm wide and 1,478 mm high. It has a platform that offers a wheelbase of 2,787 mm. If we talk about the trunk, we find a compartment with a load capacity of 536 liters in the versions with a gasoline engine and 471 liters in the plug-in hybrid variants.
The equipment of the French model is very complete. As standard, the Peugeot 408 First Edition mounts elements such as the 3D digital instrument panel, the 10-inch central touch screen or the voice recognition system. Add 20-inch alloy wheels or seats with upholstery in three materials in addition to electrical adjustments. At the beginning we find an Allure finish.
If we get fully into the mechanical range we will find at the beginning with a 130 hp 1.2 PureTech gasoline engine. After this motorization we can select a plug-in hybrid version of 180 CV and another with 225 CV, all of them with automatic transmission. In both cases they are equipped with a 12.4 kWh battery, versions with an electrical autonomy of 62 kilometers. The arrival of a 100% electric version is planned, which we will know as the e-408.

The new Renault Austral aims to retire the Kadjar. This is the brand’s new model that is manufactured at the Palencia Factory. Its bodywork offers 4,510 mm in length, 1,825 mm in width and 1,618 mm in height, all on a platform that has a 2,667 mm wheelbase. It is bigger than an Arkana, with a trunk that also exceeds it. It has between 500 and 575 liters of capacity, depending on the position of the rear seats and the false bottom, in addition to the fact that it can reach up to 1,525 liters of cargo capacity.
The new Renault Austral with Equilibre finish, as standard, mounts a digital dashboard, speed control with limiter, rain and light sensor, recognition of traffic signs and rear parking sensors. Add electric mirrors, tinted glass, multimedia system with 9-inch screen, electric windows, automatic emergency braking, LED headlights and 17-inch wheels.
The mechanical range of the Peugeot model has access to the 1.3 TCe gasoline engine with 48V Mild-Hybrid technology and powers of 140 HP and 160 HP. In the same way, we have a non-plug-in hybrid with 200 CV, some versions that will always have front-wheel drive and automatic or manual transmission.
Which one do I buy in 2023?
The Renault Austral is available with a price starting at 30,900 euros, while the Peugeot 408 starts at 33,350 euros. They are two similar cars in some sections, but totally different in others. The lion model is more striking, although the rhombus is a more practical car.
