Porsche Taycan Turbo S Cross Turismo test: 761 hp grounding!

761 CV that make it an electric missile capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.9″!

I remember a few years ago when a manufacturer wanted to innovate by launching an electric car, it gave it an unnecessarily futuristic and unwise design. Edges everywhere and optical groups more typical of a science fiction movie. For some time now, the story has changed, and now we have battery-powered cars that are much more attractive than models with a combustion engine. That not all… The test, the Porsche Taycan Turbo S Cross Turismo, is the best example of this.

It is the country version of what is, also in turn, the family version of the Taycan. It is differentiated by the roof bars, the wheel arch protections, which can be in a different color, and because the air suspension can raise the body three centimeters more. In addition, the driving profiles welcome a new one: the Gravel mode.

outside and inside

In 2017 I had the opportunity to see the prototype of what would be the first electric car from Porsche. The Mission E, which is how it was called, exhibited a spectacular image, very accurate and 100% Porsche, but with modern and differentiating touches. Luckily, the Stuttgart company faithfully kept that exterior design on the production vehicle, the Taycan.

A body with smooth shapes in the purest Porsche 911 style, some marked wheel arches, also like the iconic model; some fine pilots joined by a luminous strip -that would mark the step to the coming models- and some front optical groups with four points of daylight would be the notes that would characterize the vehicle.

But following in the footsteps of the Panamera and its Sport Turismo family body, Porsche would do the same with the Taycan Cross Turismo in March 2021, launching a new more country-style and practical variant, with more spacious rear seats and a trunk. And a little later, in November 2021, the Taycan Sport Turismo made an appearance to complete the range, which combines a little more elegance.

The cabin is futuristic: screens and very few physical buttons. Yes, it gives a cleaner, modern and perfect look for a Techie, but I still find it a nuisance having to touch the screen to perform any action. I’m sorry, but it’s the big hit that I put on it. Well, and not being able to manually control the direction of the air coming out of the ventilation nozzles. I don’t know who the engineer was, but when he came up with it he must not have been very inspired…

The materials are first class, and the adjustments, too. Also, the steering wheel has the perfect diameter and thickness. In addition, this one has a switch -yes, manual- to change the driving modes. And the seats… what about the seats? Comfortable, upholstered in excellent leather and able to support the body in turns remarkably.

Regarding the space in the second row, as I told you at the beginning of this test of the Porsche Taycan Turbo S Cross Turismo, it is greater than that of the Taycan saloon. With my 1.78 m there are five fingers that separate my head from rubbing against the ceiling, while in the Taycan there are two. The same happens with the trunk -and its loading mouth-, which grows 39 liters to add 405 liters, 1,171 if the rear seat backs are folded down. In addition, also the front trunk adds 84 liters.

engine and performance

The Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo is available in version 4 (476 CV), 4S (571 CV), Turbo (680 CV) and Turbo S (761 CV) -unlike the Taycan and the Sport Turismo, there is no GTS option; logical by not marrying a sports version in a vehicle with an off-road soul. Depending on the one chosen, the power and autonomy is different, and not because of its battery, since it always equips one with 93.4 kWh (83.7 kWh useful) – they are also all-wheel drive by mounting two motors, one in front and another behind.

The one in this test is the Turbo S, a version that was crowned at the Nürburgring, in August 2022, as the fastest production electric car when rolling in the Green Hell in 7’33”. Impressive!

This Turbo S yields 761 hp, although only for 2.5 seconds and when starting from a standstill with the Launch Control function. If not, the power is the same as the lower version, the Turbo: 625 CV. But, come on, it doesn’t matter one way or the other because you won’t be able to enjoy such an exaggerated torrent of power on the open road, as long as you want to keep your driving license points. Nor will you be interested in knowing, unless you live in Germany or are a regular at the circuits, that its top speed is 250 km/h.

But, of course, depending on the type of driving you do, the autonomy will be greater or less. Officially that of the Turbo S is up to 460 km, but with the consumption that I have obtained of 24 kWh/100 km it is reduced to about 340. And to give it a shot of energy, the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo has two chargers, one for current alternating current of 11 kW (22 kW optionally) and another of direct current (150 kW upon payment).

While driving you can recharge the battery with the movement of the vehicle. There is the Range mode, which is the most economical and limits the speed to 100 km/h -it also turns off the passenger screen-, unless you stomp on the right pedal, which then deactivates that ‘stop’. Also regenerative mode on and off. The truth is that I miss some level of more intense regeneration, as they do equip other electric competition. Also that in the Normal profile and activate the regeneration, when changing to another mode and returning to the previous one, it is not memorized and remains deactivated.

Behaviour

It doesn’t matter what vehicle Porsche creates: a compact SUV, a large SUV, a saloon, a convertible… They all have spectacular sporty behaviour. And in the case of the Cross Turismo, although it is the valid variant to give you joy off the asphalt, too.

The car accelerates like a demon, has a very fast cornering and turns very flat without compromising passenger comfort. It’s a joy to attack a mountain pass with it, curve after curve, keeping the front axle at bay, going where you want it to be and without its tires complaining.

Among the driving modes are the aforementioned Normal and Range and Sport and Sport Plus, which regardless of the selected one, in acceleration, your body gets to stick to the seat like chewing gum to a wall. If you don’t turn it off, it’s accompanied by a sound that sounds more like a spaceship but is actually cool. But I’m honest: where there is a six-cylinder boxer engine, let all this melody be removed.

It accompanies a fast steering, with an exquisite touch, ideal weight and that is quite communicative, and carbon-ceramic brakes that stop the car in a flash and do not know the meaning of the word ‘fatigue’. In addition, their touch has caught my attention, because despite being regenerative, I think they are the ones that have it the most and, therefore, the ones that are closest to those of a vehicle with a combustion engine without a battery.

And as its off-road appearance shows, it can also enter tracks thanks to its higher ground clearance compared to the Taycan and Taycan Sport Turismo: 20 mm -30 if the Offroad Design Package is equipped-. The icing on the cake is the ‘Gravel’ mode, which is activated from the console screen located in the transmission tunnel. Yes, without physical button.

Regardless of its country attributes, the Cross Turismo is an excellent travel companion due to the comfort of the suspension and how well soundproofed it is… an excellent companion as long as the distance to travel is not more than 350 kilometers or you have the patience Enough to charge halfway.

Price, rivals and factors to decide the purchase

There is no electric vehicle on the market with a family body and off-road skills. The closest thing is the Audi A6 allroad and the Mercedes E-Class All-Terrain, but both are powered by a combustion engine.

For this reason, because it is unique, but also because of its ability to leave the asphalt and its magnificent dynamic qualities, it is an excellent purchase option… as long as you can afford to pay a minimum of €195,620. Although you have a Taycan 4 Cross Turismo for €101,309, which yields 476 hp, more than enough power, as evidenced by its acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.1″ and its top speed of 220 km/h.

conclusion

The best

Acceleration. Curve response. Address.

Worst
