Sebastian Vettel retires from Formula 1

The four-time world champion will say goodbye to Formula 1 after the Abu Dhabi GP.

Sebastian Vettel has announced that he will retire at the end of the current Formula 1 season, after two years as a driver for the Aston Martin team, and at the age of 35. The German has competed in the premier class of motorsport since his debut at the 2007 United States Grand Prix.

Vettel, throughout a successful career of fifteen seasons and 298 F1 Grand Prix (until the French GP), has won four world titles and has won a total of 53 victories, making him the third driver of F1 history with the most wins, behind only Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher.

“I have had the privilege of working with a lot of fantastic people in Formula 1 over the last 15 years. For the last two years I have been a driver for the Aston Martin team and although our results have not been as good as we had hoped, I am very clear that Everything a team needs to compete at the highest level in the coming years is coming together,” Vettel said.

“The decision to retire has been difficult for me to make, and I have spent a lot of time thinking about it, at the end of the year I want to take some more time to reflect on what I will focus on next, I am very clear that, being a father, I want to spend more time with my family,” he said.

“But today is not about saying goodbye. It is more about saying thank you to everyone, and especially to the fans, without whose support F1 could not exist,” he added.

Sebastian made his F1 debut at the 2007 US GP with BMW, replacing Robert Kubica, who was recovering from his terrifying accident at the Canadian GP. With the support of Red Bull that he already had, four races later, the German was promoted to a starting seat at Toro Rosso, where he left a very good feeling in the final stretch of the course.

In 2008, Vettel became the first driver to win a race with Toro Rosso, at the Italian GP, and a season later he made the jump to Red Bull, where he was runner-up in a year dominated by Jenson Button and BrawnGP. Between 2010 and 2013, ‘Seb’ and the Red Bull created by Adrien Newey, had no rival, and this successful duo won the four team and driver titles at stake.

After a 2014 in which he was overtaken by Daniel Ricciardo, Vettel joined the team of his dreams, Ferrari, where his idol, Michael Schumacher, triumphed. His career in the Maranello team was not as successful as expected, due to the car’s lack of competitiveness and also due to his own mistakes at the end of his career there.

Despite having a bittersweet taste for not winning the championship, the German went on to experience very intense and exciting fights with Lewis Hamilton in 2017 and 2018, the seasons in which Vettel was runner-up in the world.

In 2021, Sebastian signed for what will be his last team in Formula 1, Aston Martin, a mid-table team where the German has achieved (to date), a podium finish at last year’s Azerbaijan GP as the best result.

In the last few hours, it had come to light that Vettel had created an Instagram account, something the German had said in the past that he would do when he retired from F1. In his first post there, ‘Seb’ explains the reasons for his withdrawal, noting mainly that “there is life off the track”.

For the four-time world champion, what happens outside the circuits has also been an issue. Committed to human causes and the fight against climate change, Vettel has raised his voice in recent years whenever he has been able.

He is also a very familiar man and jealous of his privacy, so whether or not he decides to compete in another category in the future, it is clear that he will try to dedicate much more time to his wife and children.
