Sony has partnered with Honda to launch its first electric car at CES Las Vegas 2023. It will be sold from 2025 under the new Afeela brand.

Honda and Sony announced in March last year a collaboration agreement to jointly develop electric cars starting in 2025. Ten months later, both Japanese companies have presented their first electric car at CES Las Vegas 2023, a vehicle still in the conceptual phase. which will hit the market as early as 2026 under the new Afeela brand.

The result of this joint venture is a new brand, Afeela, and a company called Sony Honda Mobility. It is also the first vehicle that will derive from this association, a concept car still without a commercial name that is an evolution of the Sony Vision-S Concept that the technology giant presented at CES Las Vegas three years ago now.

We talk about evolution because it actually seems to be more developed than the car that was presented in January 2020, closer to the final production version. So much so, that very few elements of its design indicate that it is still a prototype, and its futuristic image with minimalist touches will hardly change when sales begin in mid-2025.

Of the highlights of its image are its clean and aerodynamic surfaces, the 21-inch wheels, and what Honda and Sony have dubbed the ‘media bar’. It sits in the middle of the headlights and taillights, and is an interactive screen that displays information, from the Afeela logo to animations representing the weather.

The first Sony Honda Mobility car measures 4,895mm in length, 1,900mm in width and 1,460mm in height, with a wheelbase that reaches 3,000mm. The result is a spacious interior that is accessed through four side doors and in which up to five passengers can travel.

Sony has participated very actively in the development of the cabin. The Japanese company has installed a screen that runs the entire width of the vehicle, at whose ends the images captured by the cameras installed instead of the rear-view mirrors are projected, and a digital instrument panel and a large touch screen are integrated for the system. multimedia.

We can also see a yoke-type steering wheel, like Tesla or Lexus, a minimalist dashboard, a floating console and a wide panoramic roof. In addition, rear seat passengers have their own dual-screen infotainment system in the front seatbacks and the entire cabin is set with LED lighting.

The concept car will offer Level 3 autonomous driving technology thanks to a wide repertoire of cameras and sensors (45 in total) distributed inside and outside. Epic Games technology and the Metaverse will also be given importance to offer connectivity, video games and an augmented reality navigation system.

At the moment, the new joint venture has not disclosed details about the vehicle’s propulsion system. We know that it is an electric car and that in some images of the interior it is shown that it has a range of 377 kilometers with a 75% battery level. We will know more details about this section as its launch approaches.
