Special surveillance campaign of the DGT for Holy Week 2022

The special surveillance campaign of the DGT for Holy Week 2022 will begin on April 8 and will last until the 18th.

One of the holiday seasons arrives where a greater volume of road trips is registered in a short period of time. In Easter 2022, 14.6 million trips are expected and, for this reason, the General Directorate of Traffic has launched a special surveillance campaign that will begin next Friday, April 8.

Although road travel will be reduced by around 2.1% compared to Easter 2019, a large volume of traffic is expected in the coming days, so the DGT will launch a special surveillance and awareness campaign which also includes an informative campaign on television and social networks.

“Let’s make Big Data wrong” is the slogan that the DGT’s new awareness campaign to avoid traffic accidents has presented for Easter 2022. Traffic has turned to one of the most important Big Data analysts in Spain to make a forecast regarding the accident rate that is estimated for this holiday season.

Based on more than 10 million traffic accidents, and through algorithms and mathematical models, the specialist has calculated the number of road deaths expected for this Easter. According to this expert, there will be 36 people with different profiles who will lose their lives this vacation.

“When they tell you that 36 people are going to die this holiday on the road, you never think that it will be yourself or someone in your family, but behind each statistic there are names and surnames, parents, boyfriends, friends, grandchildren… a real drama which is difficult to overcome”, explained Pere Navarro, director of the DGT.

The campaign can be seen on television, in the press and on social networks in the coming days, as the dates set for Easter and during the holidays approach.

Two special surveillance phases

With the aim of reducing road traffic accidents, the DGT will launch a special surveillance device divided into two phases that will begin next Friday, April 8 at 3:00 p.m. and will end at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, April 18 .

Traffic points out that this operation is one of the most complicated of the year due to the multitude of trips that take place in a short space of time, with similar origins and destinations, and carried out on the same days and hours.

For this reason, the surveillance device will be divided into two phases that will coincide with the two days with the highest number of displacements, where almost 90% of the movements are concentrated:

  • The first phase will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, April 8 and end at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 10. In this phase, the DGT foresees 3.7 million trips.
  • The second phase will begin on Wednesday, April 13, except in Catalonia, which will begin the following day. It will end at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, April 18. Traffic has indicated that this second phase will be even more important than the first, since it will concentrate the largest volume of travel this Easter.

The DGT has recalled that on March 21 the new Traffic Law 2022 came into force, which includes important changes that affect speed, alcohol consumption, or the use of mobile phones or seat belts. Easter 2022 will be the litmus test to verify the effectiveness of the new measures adopted.
