Like every year, it’s time to change the time on the clock. It’s something we’ve gotten used to doing twice a year, both for summer and winter time. However, we are getting closer to stopping doing it forever.

Although, until this changes in Spain, for the moment, this will be the day in which we will have to be aware of whether the clock has changed the time automatically or to do it ourselves. On this occasion, it is time to adjust the clocks to summer time. So, like every year, it will be time to add an hour.

When does the time change?

The time change for summer time this year will take place at dawn from Saturday March 25 to Sunday March 26, 2023. At that time, it will be necessary to be aware that the clocks advance one hour, that is, in Spain it will pass from 02:00 a.m. to 03:00 a.m. (official peninsular time). Although, that happens on the peninsula.

On the other hand, if you live in the Canary Islands, at 01:00 it will be 02:00. However, this time change will also take place on the same day, that is, at dawn from Saturday to Sunday, March 26. The only thing is that it will become two in the morning instead of three.

Time change

This time change, like every year, has the objective that people can take more advantage of the hours of natural light and thus save some energy and money every month. However, time changes are always under constant debate and, for this very reason, it is possible that by 2026 things will change forever.

The last time change in Spain

The European Union already agreed, in 2019, to end the time change in all member countries. As much as it is constantly argued that electricity is saved and the hours are better used. It also has a series of negative points for citizens, such as heart rates. For this reason, it was agreed that the last time change would take place in March 2021 or October 2021, depending on the time zone chosen by each country.

However, years later, we still continue with the same time change. And, therefore, doubts about the end of the time change continue to grow. Therefore, for the moment, nothing indicates that it will come to an end. However, according to the calendar published in the BOE by the Ministry of the Presidency, the calendar for the time change has been set until October 25, 2026. Although, the European Union still needs to enter into consensus with the different countries so that a final decision can be reached.

What is clear is that, if there is no definitive agreement between all the countries, the time change in Spain will continue to occur twice a year. However, it is possible that, if an agreement is reached, the last time change we see will be 2026, or even earlier.
