We are already in the final stretch of 2022, a difficult year for everything related to computer security due to the number of increasingly strong computer attacks that we encounter. Throughout this year (as in past years) there has been a lot of emphasis on the need to use strong passwords to protect our data and our digital life. However, this practice has not entered our heads yet, and as NordPass has shown, we continue to use bad password practices, at least in Spain.

It is true that we are increasingly aware of the importance of using a good password. But it is also true that hackers are increasingly using more sophisticated techniques to get hold of our data. A good password helps prevent our digital life from ending up in the hands of hackers. Although it is also true that, if we really want protection, it is necessary to combine it with a good double authentication system.

The most used passwords in Spain this 2022

NordPass has analyzed more than 3TB of databases stolen by hackers, leaked and published online. All the passwords they have collected have been grouped by country and gender so that we can get an idea of which are the favorite passwords in different countries based on the gender of the user.

It is curious that, worldwide, passwords such as “password”, “123456”, “guest” and “qwerty” continue to be the most used by users. However, in Spain, things change (a bit). And it is that the most used password in Spain in 2022 has been “123456”, although we also find “123456789” in second place, and curiously, in third place, the “swing” password.

As we can see, in Spain we also like numerical passwords very much, as in the rest of the world. And “password” is still a great choice (at least, in your head) for many. We also came to use city passwords, such as “barcelona”, “I love you” and proper names such as “andrea”, “alejandro” or “cristina”. The password that occupies the 24th position, by the way, is not wasted.

Good password practices

To prevent them from stealing our passwords, it is important to use strong passwords. These passwords must contain letters (upper and lower case), numbers and symbols, as random as possible. In this way, not only can the password not be guessed using dictionaries, but deciphering it, if it is encrypted, will take months.

In addition to using long and random passwords, it is also very important to use unique passwords. In other words, a unique password for email, another for each social network, another for each website… for this there are password generators that are included in browsers and managers. In addition, these will help us to keep these passwords safe so that we do not have to remember them.

Of course, in addition to a strong and secure password, it is necessary to have additional security measures, such as double authentication. In this way, if someone gets our password and tries to log in with it, they will not be able to do so without the temporary code that the 2FA app will generate for us.
