Tesla cuts the price of its electric vehicles, the rest of the brands do not (the majority)

His rivals are calm.

Tesla has started the year with the announcement of the price cut of its models. Some sources argued that the company was at a bad time and made the decision to revitalize the demand for its cars, others pointed out that due to the margins it managed, it wanted to complicate the situation for its rivals.

The movement has been followed with interest, due to the fact that it could mean a price war between brands that, finally, would lower the cost of electric cars. Is it going to be like this? The clear answer is that it seems not at the moment.

The only manufacturer that has acted accordingly has been Ford, which applied a significant reduction in the price of the Mustang Mach-E: 5,400 euros on average between the different versions of the SUV (in some the drop was only $600, in others it reached up to the $5,900).

The objective with the movement was to strengthen the position enjoyed by the SUV, since in 2022 it was consolidated as the third best-selling electric car in the United States.

But what about the other brands? Have they reacted in a similar way? Not at all, the general feeling is much calmer and, for the moment, the main players in the zero emission market have no plans to lower their rates.

The colleagues of The Verge have been able to speak with heads of General Motors, BMW, Mercedes and Hyundai and their responses have been very similar.

Mary Barra, CEO of GM, explains: “When we look at our strong product portfolio and the interest we have in the prices that we have already announced, we feel that we are well positioned.”

Miles Johnson, a Hyundai spokesman, notes: “Hyundai has not taken any specific actions in response to competitive price changes, but we are constantly evaluating the entire market to ensure our vehicles are competitively priced.”

Robert Moran, spokesman for Mercedes, has stated the following: “We have no plans to review our current pricing strategy, which reflects the comprehensive and premium customer experience expected of Mercedes-Benz.”

Finally, from BMW they have indicated: “From the side of the BMW brand, I can tell you that there are no plans to reduce the prices of our electric vehicles.”

In general, traditional manufacturers are happy with their position and it can be inferred from their statements that they do not consider price the differential factor of their vehicles, pointing out that other elements (experience, premium sentiment, etc.) are what distinguish them.
