Test of the Toyota GR Corolla Circuit Edition: a true devourer of curves

After the Yaris, Toyota has “inflated its big brother.” We have tested the GR Corolla Circuit Edition… which, at the moment, is only sold in the United States

Like a chubby Mini, the Toyota GR Yaris is a real candy for all fans of small sports cars. Now Toyota gets its hands on the big brother and, with the Toyota GR Corolla Circuit Edition, has given it a vitamin boost… at least, in the United States, where we’ve already driven it.

Design and engine of the Toyota GR Corolla

The Japanese muscle their compact global model with huge fenders, a martial front with huge air intakes, all kinds of spoilers, a carbon roof and a rear apron with three exhaust outlets.

A turbocharged 1.6-litre three-cylinder roars at the bow, sending out a whopping 300bhp and 370Nm of torque through a six-speed manual transmission to variable all-wheel drive with Torsen differentials on both axles. In normal driving, 60 percent of the power goes to the front, but you can send a maximum of 70 percent to the rear via a rotary control on the center console.

Behavior: Lots of fun in the Corolla chassis

If you drink, don’t drive, but if you’re not sure if you can do it, it’s better to get healthy with a test before starting.

The GR Corolla Circuit Edition, which weighs almost 1.5 tons, accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds and reaches, with an electronic limiter, 230 km/h. That does not matter at all for someone whose profession is curves: Toyota has widened the tracks and has mounted some 235 Michelin Pilot Sport 4s that merge with the asphalt.

Overall, Toyota has handled the suspension set-up superbly. Pleasantly firm steering response is excellent and, depending on power distribution, even drive forces don’t interfere in high-speed cornering. On country roads, the is pure fun.

Cockpit GR Corolla

The GR Corolla’s three-way tube produces a roaring sound, and although the standard consumption is 9.8 liters per 100 kilometers, if you let this little beast fly, the bill will go up a lot more.

Interior of the sportiest Corolla

So that the driver has everything under control, the Corolla is equipped with sport seats and very well profiled pedals. The leather steering wheel would feel even more grippy with an Alcantara cover when things get hotter, but the leather upholstery is a joy to touch.

GR Corolla Circuit Edition sweep

The digital instrument unit is a bit overloaded, but you quickly get used to the deluge of information.

This also applies to the eight-inch touchscreen in the center of the dashboard, which can be used to control navigation, the sound system and vehicle functions. Impressive for such a sporty compact model, by the way: in addition to various safety systems, there are ten airbags on board.

GR Corolla rear

Everything is available in the United States from 42,900 dollars (40,793 euros to change), and at the moment a launch on the European market is not planned. But who knows, the GR Yaris finally did it. Let’s hope they rethink it.
