Just a few days ago we talked about the best five-cylinder engines that have been sold in Spain, a unique mechanic that is characterized by being rare. The ones that are somewhat more common are six-cylinder engines, either in-line, V-shaped or boxer. Here I bring you a selection of the 10 best six-cylinder engines that have been sold in Spain.
The list that you will see below includes only ten six-cylinder engines that stand out for their reliability or technical characteristics. Not all of them are there, and most likely some of them are missing that should be included in the list, but it is difficult to remove any of the engines that you are going to discover below.
bmw
We cannot talk about six-cylinder engines and leave out BMW. The German manufacturer is a faithful defender of this type of mechanics and the S54B32 block of the BMW M3 E46 is one of the best it has designed. We are talking about a 3.2-liter inline six-cylinder and naturally aspirated that develops 343 HP of power (360 HP in the M3 CSL) capable of spinning up to 8,000 rpm.

Another classic that cannot be missing from the list is Nissan’s VR38DETT engine. The heart of the R35 generation of the Nissan GT-R is one of the V6 engines ever built. With 3.8 liters of capacity and a twin turbocharger system, this engine can exceed 600 HP of power with its factory specifications and is boostable to more than 1,000 HP.
Porsche
Porsche’s love affair with six-cylinder engines goes back to the origins of the German company. If I had to choose one, I would choose the Porsche 911 GT3 RS, a naturally aspirated six-cylinder boxer engine with a 4.0-liter capacity that develops 525 hp and reaches 9,000 rpm with overwhelming speed.
Audi
We pass to the six-cylinder diesel engines and in the list we have included two turbodiesel mechanics with these characteristics. The first is Audi’s famous V6 TDI, a robust and reliable 3.0-litre block that has been available in different power levels over the years and is still going strong. The pinnacle of this engine is the A6 Bi TDI Competition with 326 hp and 650 Nm of torque.
Mercedes Benz
Mercedes-Benz is also known for its six-cylinder engines and part of its fame is due to the turbodiesel blocks. I have chosen the OM648 engine, a 3.2-liter inline six-cylinder diesel engine that developed 204 HP of power in the Mercedes E-Class W211. Today, after more than 20 years on the market, the E-Class 320 CDI continues to be one of the most sought after for its reliability.

And from diesel engines we went back to gasoline engines. Specifically, at the heart of the Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA, a 2.9 biturbo V6 engine of Ferrari origin that in the GTA version of the Giulia offers 540 HP of power and 600 Nm of torque. This powerful engine is accompanied by a sporty tune and allows the Italian saloon to reach a top speed of 300 km/h.

Kia sneaks into this list of the 10 best six-cylinder engines that have been sold in Spain on its own merits and thanks to the engine of the Kia Stinger GT. It is a 3.3-liter V6 T-GDi engine that develops 370 HP of power and 510 Nm of torque, an engine and a car with which the South Korean manufacturer amazed the market at its launch in 2017.

Lexus has also developed several six-cylinder engines for its cars, but if I have to choose just one, I’ll stick with the mechanics of the Lexus IS200. We are talking about a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine that develops 155 horsepower. It is not a high number compared to other members of this ranking, but it is an equally interesting mechanic.
Mazda
And in this list of the 10 best six-cylinder engines that have been sold in Spain, there is also room for an SUV. This is the Mazda CX-60 and its two 3.3-liter inline six-cylinder engines, a 254-hp gasoline one and a 200-hp diesel one. These two Mazda engines enter the ranking for going against the current of the market trend.
Toyota
Finally, the tenth six-cylinder engine that makes up this article is the powertrain of the reborn Toyota Supra.
