The automotive sector has a new problem: there are no truckers to transport cars

After the pandemic, truckers are going through a delicate moment, due to the slowdown in car production and the rise in fuel prices.

As if it had few problems, with the microchip crisis or the supply of components, now a new problem threatens the automotive sector: there are no trucks to transport cars.

The lack of truckers has already left thousands of cars parked in the ports and in the fields of the manufacturers, preventing their arrival at the dealerships, according to the newspaper Economía Digital. This, logically, has had negative consequences on sales in recent weeks.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, transport professionals are going through a delicate moment, due to the slowdown in car production and, later, the sharp rise in fuel prices.

No truckers to transport cars

This has caused a general reduction in activity and an irregularity in demand and unbalanced transport flows, in addition to a 40% drop in cargo capacity, according to the Association of Carriers and Automotive Logistics of the Spanish Confederation of Transport of Goods (CETM).

According to sources in the automotive sector, the successive crises that have affected road transport have caused around 800 car transporter truckers to change their activity or retire.

This shortage of truckers is having serious consequences for the automobile industry, since there is no truck to transport the cars and thousands of them remain parked in the ports of reference or in the fields of the manufacturers themselves.

Logistics caps are affecting the entire European industry, but in Spain it is being more pronounced in the automotive sector, since it is especially powerful. Let us remember that Spain is the second European automobile manufacturer, represents 10% of Spanish GDP and is responsible for 18% of total Spanish exports.

This “jam” in professional transport affects both exports and imports. One of the most affected plants is that of Stellantis in Vigo which, at the end of last November, accumulated up to 25,000 immobilized vehicles and was forced to cancel shipments.

Something similar happened in December at the same group’s factory in Figueruelas: there were 10,000 cars already purchased that could not leave the facilities, when normally they do not remain for more than 24 hours, once the orders are placed. The center had to park the vehicles in annexed areas.

As for imports, the port of Valencia, one of the main points of arrival for vehicles from brands such as Land Rover, coming from the United Kingdom, is being particularly affected. Vehicular traffic here has also been blocked in recent weeks.
