The DGT recalls the importance of sleeping well before getting behind the wheel of the car

There are certain recommendations regarding driving that at this point should not even be necessary to remember, however, as there are still many drivers who do not take the danger of drowsiness at the wheel seriously, it never hurts to remind them.

The DGT has published a tweet making a brief reminder pointing out that “it can cause fatal distractions, since it significantly increases the reaction time to traffic events”, although that would be pretty much summarizing all the consequences that it can imply.

In addition to reaction time, which is seriously impaired and makes it much more likely to have an accident in the event of an unforeseen event, it implies a whole series of negative effects:

  • Makes it harder to stay focused, especially in monotonous environments, leading to more distractions behind the wheel
  • In addition to reacting slower, it also makes the driver take longer to make decisions and some of them are not the right ones.
  • When you are sleepy, your muscles go into a relaxed state, so they don’t respond as they should, leading to slower and less precise movements.
  • It is possible to go into “autopilot” mode and carry out actions and maneuvers more out of habit than consciously, which entails danger, especially if there is traffic
  • Microsleeps may occur, periods of just a few seconds in which the driver falls asleep slightly and is unable to react to what is happening on the road
  • There are also alterations in perception, distances are measured poorly, hearing is worse, signals are understood worse, etc.
  • Likewise, alterations in sensory functions can directly occur, requiring stronger stimuli (visual, sound, etc.) for the individual to react as they would under normal conditions.
  • In addition, it may be that the person with drowsiness, because of this, is more irritable or aggressive than usual, which can lead to a more reckless attitude behind the wheel.

It may seem like something that hardly affects drivers, but, according to the General Directorate of Traffic, it intervenes, directly or indirectly, in between 15 and 30% of traffic accidents that occur in Spain.
