Over the years, new technologies are leaving behind those that, at the time, marked a before and after. And this is just what has happened with the fax in this country. Since this same year, the worldwide retirement of this technology is getting closer, why?

Today, the use of fax is still one of the most used options by companies. However, it is quite rare to find friends or relatives who have a machine at home. However, the UK has decided that it is time for a change and has begun to say goodbye to faxing.

Farewell to fax in the UK

At the beginning of November of last year, we heard the news: the United Kingdom was considering ending the fax. But, not exactly in that way, but rather he was considering whether it was time to end the law that keeps, to this day, alive the use of this service in order to extend his life.

In fact, it was the competent authority itself, Ofcom, which regulates this service in the country, which came to open a public consultation to stop considering fax as a universal service. And what does a universal service consist of? Well, we are facing a law that ensures that basic fixed line services are available at an affordable price for each of the citizens and customers of the British country.

This measure was quite well received. This has led to telecom companies such as BT and KCOM no longer considering fax as part of the country’s universal service. So, it is coming to an end.

The end of the fax worldwide?

The step that the UK has taken in establishing that fax is no longer a universal service for all citizens is very important. In addition, it must also be taken into account that, from the EU, there is already talk that we are facing an obsolete solution that many companies continue to use to save costs and not change the technology they use. Basically, because there are different, more modern and faster methods.

However, there are many countries, such as Spain, in which this technology is still used. And although many nations have favored its continued use by marking it as “secure” technology, the truth is that security is an issue.

For example, many users, who continue to use fax, think that it is more secure than sending email. However, the difficulty to intercept a fax is the same as for an email. Basically, because the fax also has different vulnerabilities that cybercriminals can get their hands on.

In any case, although in Spain it is not considered part of the universal service, we still find that, in Correos, we can still send burofaxes from its website. So, if it is maintained, it is because people continue to use this option. What is clear is that its end is drawing near. Although, he still has rope left.
