From January 2023, drivers in any discipline under the FIA umbrella will be prohibited from making any kind of political statement.

The International Automobile Federation (FIA) has updated the International Sports Code, which from now on includes the prohibition for drivers to make any type of political, religious or personal statement, in F1 and any competition that is under the umbrella of the FIA.

Gestures like that of Lewis Hamilton at the 2020 Tuscany Grand Prix, where he wore a T-shirt calling for “the arrest of the police officers who killed Breonna Taylor”, a woman who was shot by US police at her home in Kentucky, or the Sebastian Vettel’s shirt in support of the LGTBI collective in Hungary, could have come to an end.

In the new article 12.2.1n of the International Code, the FIA establishes from now on that it will be considered an infringement of the regulations “the making and exhibition of political, religious and personal statements or comments that notably violate the general principle of neutrality promoted by the FIA by virtue of its Statutes”.

And it continues, with one exception: “…unless they have been previously approved in writing by the FIA for International Competitions or by the corresponding ASN (Federation) for National Competitions within its jurisdiction”.

In this way, the FIA tries to control or at least be aware of the messages that the drivers show and promote during the sessions in which they participate, Formula 1 being the category mainly affected, since it is the one that reaches the most people and where we have seen more activism of this type in recent times.

However, as read in the article of the International Code, in reality the regulation affects all the relevant national and international automobile categories, attached to the federations and associations that in turn form part of the FIA.

In recent years, in addition to Hamilton’s claims in favor of the “Black Lives Matter” movement, which were also supported from F1 with gestures and campaigns before the races, Vettel has also raised his voice for different social and environmental issues.

In addition to the well-known example of the T-shirt in favor of the LGTBI collective in a place where their rights are in danger like Hungary, the four-time world champion asked to stop the extraction of oil in the tar sands of Alberta (Canada), considering it a climate crime on the part of of the country, something that could cause discomfort in the promoter or in his own team.

This ban on political statements and gestures by the FIA will undoubtedly give a lot to talk about, especially from the start of the Formula 1 season, where Lewis Hamilton will surely be asked a question on this subject. And, as we have usually seen, his opinion is not going to be silenced.
