The five worst rivals of the Toyota Prius 2023

The Japanese brand has just presented the fifth generation of the Toyota Prius that will hit the market in 2023 in a PHEV version. Here we show you his five worst rivals.

We have just met the new Toyota Prius 2023, the new generation (fifth already) of the hybrid car par excellence, although, in this new installment, it will only arrive in Europe in its plug-in hybrid version. We are going to discover which are his five worst rivals.

The new Toyota Prius is presented with very notable changes in the aesthetic section, radically breaking with the past. Now it adopts a much sportier design, with a certain air of a coupe. The interior also changes, more minimalist, better finished and, above all, much more technological.

The main novelty of the Prius hybrid is in its propulsion system: there will only be a plug-in variant, while, in other markets, a conventional hybrid will remain.

The mechanics deliver a total power of 223 CV, together with a 13.6 kWh battery with cells of higher energy density that allows the Prius PHEV to travel a distance of 75 kilometers in fully electric mode. In addition, the car recover energy through a solar panel located on the roof to power the electronic systems.

It should be noted that both the Toyota Prius 2023 and the five rivals that we show below, have the ZERO label from the DGT, having exceeded 40 kilometers of electric autonomy.

Five Worst 2023 Toyota Prius Rivals: Hyundai Ioniq PHEV

Actually, the Japanese plug-in hybrid car is a model that has few direct rivals. The only one, perhaps, is the Hyundai Ioniq PHEV, although it should be noted that the Korean brand decided to end its production last July. Will continue to sell while stock lasts.

The Ioniq shares some characteristics with the Japanese, such as the shape of the body. It is equipped with a 105 hp gasoline engine and an electric one to give a combined power of 141 hp. The battery is 8.9 kWh, smaller than that of the Prius, so it also has less autonomy: 52 kilometers.

Another of the worst rivals of the Toyota Prius 2023 is the Skoda Octavia iV, although the Czech saloon is larger. It is available with two plug-in hybrid versions: one with 204 CV and another, called RS iV, with 245 CV.

Both versions include a 13 kWh gross capacity battery (10.9 kWh useful) that allows it to travel more than 50 kilometers, according to the WLTP cycle.

Kia XCeed PHEV

The Kia XCeed isn’t a direct rival, based on the crossover body type, but it is available with a hybrid powertrain. This is the same mechanic of the Ioniq mentioned above.

Therefore, it is equipped with a 105 CV 1.6 gasoline engine and a 61 CV electric motor that together deliver 141 CV. It is powered by a 8.9 kWh capacity battery that provides 48 kilometers of autonomy in combined cycle and up to 60 kilometers in the city.

The main advantage of the XCeed over the new Prius is that, being an SUV and therefore taller, it is more versatile. However, it is not better in interior space or in the trunk: it barely offers 291 liters in its PHEV variant. We do not yet know the volume of the Prius, but it will be a lot of May, without a doubt.

Peugeot 308 Hybrid

For the first time, the French compact is available in a plug-in hybrid version. Moreover, two options of this type: Hybrid 180 and Hybrid 225. As its name suggests, the first offers 180 CV and the second 225 CV.

Both versions mount a 12.4 kWh gross capacity lithium-ion battery that provides an electric range of 60 kilometers in the Hybrid 180 and 59 kilometers in the Hybrid 225.

We have not yet been able to know the road behavior of the Toyota Pirus 2023, but we can only say positive things about the Peugeot 3008 Hybrid: it is very smooth, offers a great balance between comfort and dynamism and great acoustic insulation.

Seat Leon e-Hybrid

The plug-in hybrid version of the Seat León is also a serious rival to the Prius PHEV. This is a very comfortable, quiet and relatively fast car, which can use very little fuel.

It has a hybrid system consisting of a 1.4 TSI 150 CV gasoline engine and a 116 CV electric motor, which can work separately or together. Simultaneously, the maximum power is 204 hp.

It is powered by a 13.2 kWh capacity battery (9.8 useful kWh) that provides an electrical range of 64 kilometers.
