A classification to forget.

Fernando Alonso will start from a disappointing seventeenth place tomorrow at the Spanish Formula 1 Grand Prix. This weekend, not only is the Alpine A522 not up to par with the mid-grid teams, but also a misunderstanding with the team made Alonso fall in the first part of the classification.

Alonso played the passage to Q2 in the last minutes of Q1. In Alpine they had decided to wait until the last moment to find the track in the best conditions, and that hurt them. The Asturian found himself in heavy traffic on his warm-up lap, eventually getting stuck behind Lando Norris.

A misunderstanding with his engineer about the time remaining on the stopwatch for the session caused Alonso to take his foot off the accelerator when he had actually crossed the finish line in time to do one more lap.

Alonso explained what happened to the media, but did not even complain about the traffic, and the FIA did not investigate what happened with the McLaren. After all, he and Norris were in the same situation, looking for the best position to do one last fast lap.

“There was a lot of traffic. At the start of the lap we were at the time limit, because the session was over. I didn’t have much information from the engineer, there was a misunderstanding, because I thought there was one second left when there were twenty, and I was behind Lando trying to to go into the lap. It was a misunderstanding,” Alonso said.

The two-time Spanish champion also revealed that the car of his teammate, Esteban Ocon, has some new parts that he does not have on his A522, which may justify the time difference between the two drivers… beyond the confusion that Alonso has spoken. Ocon did make it to Q2, but he didn’t get much further: he could only finish twelfth.

Alpine is also not getting it right with the evolution of the single-seater, since it has been easily surpassed by other teams with which it could afford to fight at the start of the season, such as Haas, Mercedes or McLaren, who are now an important step ahead.

As a goal for tomorrow, Alonso has indicated on Instagram that the points will be distributed on Sunday, but until then it will be very difficult, since high tire degradation is expected and with that the French team also suffers a lot. Be that as it may, Alonso will once again give everything to finish as high up as possible… and even more so, in front of his unconditional public.
