The never-deciphered mystery of the modern Egyptian wheel that is 5,000 years old

They call it the Sabu Disc and it was discovered in 1936 and it is more than five centuries old

Since the wheel was invented, around the year 4500 BC, there have been many attempts (some more successful than others) to create alternatives. Not long ago, for example, we talked about the first square-shaped bike wheel that works (but has a trick). What we are going to tell you about in the next few lines is even more curious because it is a wheel designed in Egypt 5,000 years ago and whose objective has not been deciphered.

This mysterious Egyptian wheel has been given the name Sabu Disk or Schist Disk. It is surprising that its manufacture goes back five centuries when, due to the design and quality of the finishes, it could well be a modern rim.

The mystery of the Egyptian wheel

The Sabu Disc is so named because it was discovered in 1936 within the tomb of Sabu, a high Egyptian official of the First Dynasty around 3000 BC.

As our colleagues from Computer Hoy explain, Sabu was not a pharaoh although there are historians who affirm that he was the son of Adjuib. What is confirmed is that he treasured a unique object, of which it has not been possible to discover, for the moment, neither how it was built nor for what purpose. To this day, Sabu’s record is on display at the Cairo Museum.

Lost Stone Cutting Technologies of Ancient Egypt – The Schist Disk

The mysterious Egyptian wheel has a diameter of 61 centimeters and a central circle of 10 cm. It is made of a mineral similar to slate

Regarding its possible usefulness, given that it was discovered along with other funerary objects, there are historians who defend the theory that it is a censer (to store incense). Others deny it, saying that it is too complex an object for such a simple task.

Decades after its discovery, there are many unknowns surrounding this finding. Among them, how can it be that the disk was made 1,500 years before the Egyptians began to use the wheel? Also enigmatic is the fact that at that time they did not use stone to create objects, but copper or bronze, so it is inexplicable that they achieved such perfection in the forms.
