The Porsche 911 Dakar is now ready for its debut, the first 911 off-roader

At the Los Angeles Motor Show, the new Porsche 911 Dakar will be presented, an off-road version with remarkable off-road capabilities of the legendary German sports car.

On November 16, a new milestone will take place at Porsche. On that day, the first two-door sports car with remarkable off-road capabilities will see the light of day at the Los Angeles Motor Show: the Porsche 911 Dakar.

It is the first off-road Porsche 911 and the most adventurous sports car that the German brand has created in its history. It is the result of a long work project that we have known during its development phase as 911 Safari.

The name of the model is a tribute to the Porsche 953 with which the German brand achieved its first victory in the Dakar Rally, achieved in 1984. That car was a suitably modified Porsche 911, with all-wheel drive.

The new Porsche 911 Dakar has accumulated more than half a million test kilometers, including more than 10,000 off-road, in which it has passed all kinds of tests in various parts of the world and in extreme conditions, such as on the Weissach tracks. .

For example, the Château Lastours test circuit in the south of France was used to test the car’s response on typical rally tracks and fine-tune the suspension. Various tests were also carried out with the Porsche 911 Dakar on slippery surfaces.

In this sense, the Porsche driver, Romain Dumas, was amazed by the performance of the 911 Dakar off the asphalt: “I knew what a 911 could do on the road, but I was absolutely surprised by how well the car behaved on the road. these tracks.”

The new 911 Dakar also had to prove its capabilities on fast sand tracks and high dunes. In Dubai and Morocco, test drivers pushed the sporty off-roader to the limit, through steep 50-metre dunes in temperatures of up to 45 degrees.

With the approval of Walter Röhrl

Legendary rally driver and two-time world champion Walter Röhrl also got behind the wheel of the Porsche 911 Dakar and put it to the test on the Arjeplog estate in Sweden, where the thick ice of the lakes provides drivers with the base ideal for driving on a snow surface with a density of about 90%.

A Porsche 911 always has to provide a good feeling behind the wheel, even off the asphalt. And the Dakar succeeds: “The car is incredibly fun to drive. Everything works precisely and smoothly. No Porsche customer will believe how much can be done with this vehicle before they have driven it themselves,” says Röhrl.

For his part, the Porsche ambassador, Jörg Bergmeister, was surprised by the dynamics of a vehicle with greater ground clearance: “I did not believe that a vehicle with so much ground clearance and off-road tires could behave like a Porsche 911 on the ground. asphalt”.
