The replacement of the Mazda 6 is in the air, at least in Europe

Another sedan that could succumb to SUVs

Little by little, Mazda is renewing its product range. Just a few weeks ago, we met the new Mazda CX-60, a very important model for the Japanese brand, in order to increase its sales volume in the European market. But we also get rumors that we don’t like at all, like that the replacement for the Mazda 6 is in the air, at least in Europe.

Surely, before continuing reading, you are already imagining the reason. Indeed, the rise of SUVs, far from slowing down, continues to grow and at Mazda they are aware, which is leaving the next generation of the Japanese saloon in the background.

In this sense, the head of engineering and development of Mazda Europe, Joachim Kunz, made some very revealing statements to Autocar magazine: “It would be very interesting to have a six-cylinder engine for a Mazda 6 or a large coupé, we would love it, but right now it’s more important to sell SUVs. This trend continues and it is what sells the best.”

You can say higher, but not clearer. However, it is not so clear that the Japanese company will definitively bury its mid-size saloon. What Kunz says is that they give priority to SUVs, something that should not surprise anyone.

Secondly, at no time does the person in charge of engineering and development of the brand in Europe recognize that they are not working on a new Mazda 6 with a six-cylinder engine. Of course, it would be for other markets, leaving Europe out.

This would leave room for the next generation sedan in other regions where sedans are still popular.

Mazda is silent

According to CarScoops, after contacting the brand’s representatives in the United Kingdom and the United States, neither wanted to make any statement or speculate on the future plans of the brand.

What is clear is that sedans are less and less interesting for European customers and many manufacturers are abandoning that segment in favor of SUVs. And Mazda is also on this path.
