The saloon that became a hybrid to have an Eco Label and is about to disappear due to the push of SUVs

The Ford Mondeo is about to disappear, after the brand announced the end of its production a year ago, due to the rise of SUVs.

Little by little, SUVs are cannibalizing even traditional segments that, until now, seemed indestructible, such as sedans. One of its latest victims is about to disappear, a saloon that became a hybrid to have an ECO Label: the Ford Mondeo.

Two years ago, Ford announced the end of Mondeo production, something that officially happened in March 2022. Since then, the oval brand has continued to sell the models it had in stock and they are already ending.

The announcement of the withdrawal of the Ford Mondeo from the European market came months after the brand did the same with the Fusion, the North American version of the Mondeo. In this way, segment D loses one of its references, since it was launched on the market in 1993.

The Ford Mondeo is about to disappear

The reason for the disappearance of the Ford Mondeo is none other than the rise of SUVs and crossovers, which has caused the segment of sedans to decrease significantly in recent years.

As a brand spokesman acknowledged, “the market segment in which Mondeo competes has been declining for years and has dropped 80% since 2000.”

In 2021, only 962 units were sold, and in 2020, just over a thousand. In fact, despite being clearly more expensive, more copies of the Ford Mustang Mach-E were marketed than the Mondeo.

Although the model stopped being produced in March 2022, since January of the same year it was not possible to order it in Spain and it even disappeared from the brand’s configurator.

A benchmark since 1993

The Ford Mondeo is about to disappear

Launched on the market in 1993 as a direct replacement for the Sierra, the Ford Mondeo has accumulated more than five million units sold in Europe. Traditionally, it has been marketed with numerous diesel and gasoline engines, but in recent times it did so with a 187 CV hybrid mechanics that allowed it to have the ECO Label.

Now, we will see what path other brands follow, such as Volkswagen with the Passat. The Germans have already made it clear that a new Passat will come, although only with a Variant family body, which is the best-selling in Europe.

It seems that the future of sedans involves adopting a more coupé and sporty style, something that Peugeot knew how to do very well with the 508. But it is clear that the classic saloon concept has died because of the SUV.
