These PS5 can be hacked: learn to know what they are

A few days ago it was revealed that PlayStation 5 had been jailbroken, which is the starting point in a future in which homebrew and modifications can begin to have a free hand for the new generation console PS5.

However, as usual in these cases, not all console firmware versions are capable of running this jailbreak, which would save Sony from a major catastrophe.

What does the PS5 jailbreak allow?

the playstation modder SpecterDev was the one who unveiled the new jailbreak: an experimental exploit of the IPV6 kernel for PS5. This jailbreak relies on a WebKit vulnerability as an entry point, so it will only work on PS5s running firmware 4.03 or lower, and even then it only apparently works about 30% of the time.

In simple terms, jailbreaking refers to the reverse engineering of closed hardware and is often used to unlock debug menus and allow unauthorized software to be used. Another modder, Lance MacDonald, showed this new jailbreak in action by installing the famous lost game PT on his PS5.

Lower firmwares may work (although the exploit may need tweaking), while higher PlayStation 5 firmwares will not work at this time (they are not vulnerable to the Webkit exploit).

How to find out your PS5 firmware version

As we said, the first essential requirement to be able to tinker with your PlayStation 5 and explore the debug menu is to have a firmware lower than 4.03 (a version that was released in October 2021). Right now, if you have your PS5 up to date, you probably have firmware 22.02-06.00.01 (it was released on October 5, 2022), but if you haven’t used it for a while and want to try this exploit, you might be in luck.

What we have to do to check the firmware version that we have installed, since the nomenclature is somewhat more complex than in PlayStation 4, is to go to the Options menu> System> System Software> Console Information.

Here a number will appear indicating the current version of the system software that you have installed on your PlayStation 5. The specific version number appears after the dash, so if something like “22.02-06.00.01” appears, you have version 6.00.01.

In case you have the correct version for the jailbreak, in your console you will find something that begins with 21.02-04.03.00. If you have that version, disconnect the network cable and deactivate the WiFi Internet connection, since an automatic firmware update could occur from the system or when trying to start an online service.
