The price of the kWh in the regulated market is reviewed by the Government based on the price of light that is set daily in the electricity market. This value varies hour by hour every day of the year according to the supply and demand of energy. That is why it is essential to know which hours are the most expensive and which are the cheapest.

Although we have had some respite in recent months with the “Iberian exception”, it is still convenient to look askance at the price of electricity so as not to have surprises on the bill if we have not decided to install our own energy sources such as solar panels. .

Most expensive and cheapest hours of light

The price of electricity per hour is typical of the regulated market electricity rate: the PVPC or Voluntary Price for Small Consumers. It is characterized by billing consumers with a different price for electricity depending on the time of day. In this way, customers can consume during the hours when the price of electricity is cheaper and thus control their monthly energy expenditure.

Estimating the price of electricity per hour in Spain is complicated. In the free market, each supplier establishes it in its rates, while in the regulated market, the Government of Spain regulates the amounts, depending on the supply and demand of energy. The more demand there is in the market, the more expensive electricity will be on that day. Specifically, it is the Ministry of Industry that specifies the price of the final light.

This hourly price curve is the result of adding the cost of energy production, the payments for transmission and distribution tolls and the corresponding charges for the energy consumed.

The new regulated tariffs include three periods in which the application of tolls and regulatory charges will vary:

  • The peak section, in which said tolls and regulated charges will be higher (10:00-14:00 and 18:00-22:00).
  • The flat section, with an intermediate impact of these regulated costs (8:00-10:00, 14:00-18:00 and 22:00-00:00).
  • The valley section, period in which these tolls and charges will be lower (from 00:00-08:00, weekends and national holidays).

These new periods are applied in the energy term and in the power term of the electricity bill of those consumers covered by the PVPC throughout the national territory, although in the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla the time slots are slightly displaced.

How to know the prices of electricity?

First of all, the most reliable information to consult the price of electricity from the website of Red Eléctrica de España (REE). The electricity operator publishes the results of the wholesale market auction every day. Knowing in advance the price of Kw each hour can help you plan your tasks for the day and know if waiting for a section can be useful or not. Red Eléctrica de España publishes every day at 8:15 p.m. the hourly prices for the following day, so you can know in advance how prices will be set.

You can also download the REE app, RedOS, in which the user can consult the demand curve in real time at any time and from anywhere, both in Spain and in the different electrical systems that make it up, as well as the price curve.

Other more specialized alternatives based on the price of electricity, although they also take their data from those published in Red Eléctrica de España, is the website TarifaLuzHora.es, whose interface allows us to see at a glance the average price of the day, the cheapest hour and the most expensive and in which you can even subscribe with your email address to receive the next day’s prices at 9:00 p.m. In addition, it also has an Android app (not in the Apple App Store) with these same key data and without ads.
