This is how you quickly switch between Mac users

If you have multiple users set up on the same Mac, you probably switch between these accounts often. With these tips you can switch to another user faster.

Switch between multiple accounts on your Mac

Switching between multiple users on the Mac can be done in several ways. The fastest way is through the fast user switching option. You don’t have to log out or restart your Mac to switch users. You can easily switch via the control panel or the menu bar. In this article we explain how to set it up and use it.

  • Quick switching via the Touch ID
  • Set up fast user switching
  • Use Fast User Switching

Quick switching via Touch ID

Do you have a Mac with Touch ID fingerprint scanner? Then you can switch even faster than we discuss below. If another user’s fingerprint is scanned, the Mac immediately switches to that account. While one user is logged in, the other user just needs to place his or her finger on the sensor. The finger is recognized, after which a switch is made to the relevant account. You may still need to enter the password.

Set up fast user switching

Before you can set up fast user switching, you need to use multiple accounts on your Mac. Then follow these steps to set it up:

  1. Open System Preferences from the Dock, menu bar, or Spotlight.
  2. Then click on Dock and menu bar.
  3. Then scroll down a little in the left column to the heading Fast user switching.
  4. Check the Show in control panel option to show the toggle icon in the control panel.

An extra button is added to the Control Center that allows you to quickly switch between users on your Mac.

Via menu bar

You can also add a button to your Mac’s menu bar that lets you switch between users. You do that like this:

  1. Open System Preferences from the Dock, menu bar, or Spotlight.
  2. Then click Users and groups.
  3. If necessary, unlock the page by clicking on the padlock and entering your password.
  4. Check the Fast User Switching Menu option. You can choose between a symbol, the full name or the account name. This will be added to your menu bar.

Enable fast user switching with full name on Mac from menu bar.

You can also check the option Show in menu bar via System Preferences > Dock & menu bar > Fast user switching, but then you can’t choose just the symbol, full name or account name.

Quick change in use

If you now open the Control Panel on the Mac, you will see an icon at the bottom. Click this and you can quickly switch to another user account on the Mac. Without having to log out first!
