Toyota Prius 2023, three strengths and a weakness for your purchase

No more being the ugly duckling.

Toyota has surprised with the Toyota Prius 2023. The pioneer of hybrid cars is already in its fifth generation and surely it is the most disruptive with the previous ones… which in general terms is quite a good thing. However, since all that glitters is not gold, there are three strengths and one weakness for your purchase.

The Prius, finally, is beautiful

Let’s stop for a moment to reflect on this, because it is something that surely the vast majority would not have considered coming to think about it (let alone express it out loud) in their lives: the Toyota Prius is a beautiful car.

It is true that the colors are for tastes, but the leap in this aspect that the Japanese model has given is undeniable. Traditionally, due to that strange imperative that cars with electrified mechanics had to be rare or peculiar (something that, thank God, has now been overcome), the Prius has always been an ugly duckling that was difficult to look at.

But it seems that the fifth time is lucky and it is that Toyota has incorporated the design language of its ‘beyond Zero’ range to give it a saloon format with coupe airs that suits it really well, achieving a model with a modern and dynamic appearance.

loaded with technology

The brand has not yet gone into details, but it has shown the first images of the interior and it is clear that the interior has also made a leap to a more modern configuration.

Although it keeps the analogue buttons on the center console, something that is appreciated, the spotlight is divided between the instrument panel, which takes a fairly high position that almost places it in a place that could be a HUD, and the central screen, which has a size of 12.3 inches.

Plug-in hybrid mechanics…

Electrification is part of the idiosyncrasy of the Toyota Prius and in this new generation it goes a step further, adopting a plug-in hybrid mechanics that combines a 148 CV 2.0 engine and a 160 CV electrical block, to develop a total of 223 CV. . Thanks to this, it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds.

It has a 13.6 kWh battery with which it can travel up to 75 kilometers in electric mode, so the plug-in hybrid Prius will wear the DGT ZERO label.

Of course, although in other markets it will be available as a conventional hybrid, it seems that this version will not arrive in Europe.

… but goodbye to the traditional hybrid

A priori it may not seem like a problem, since a plug-in hybrid car pollutes less (if it is charged with electricity) and has a better environmental label, but the disappearance of the conventional hybrid version is a bad thing for two reasons.

The first is that having variety is always a good thing, in addition to the fact that many potential customers may be interested in an HEV and not a PHEV (think, for example, of someone who cannot install a charging point in house) and that without the option they may go for a different car.

The second is obvious: With a more advanced hybrid system, the cost of the 2023 Prius is likely to be higher, so the new generation will be more expensive than the previous one. This will prevent access to the model to certain potential buyers.
