The German, this time, did not give a good example.

Surely Sebastian Vettel did not imagine that this weekend, in his first Grand Prix of the season, he would be investigated by the FIA for driving a motorcycle during the first free practice sessions. The German received permission from the stewards to return to the pits at the end of the session, after his car suffered a problem and stopped on track.

The streak of bad luck for the four-time F1 world champion continues. After missing the first two races of the year after contracting COVID-19, the German made his debut this season at the Australian GP, and at the first change, his car has said enough.

The Aston Martin AMR22 stalled with smoke from the engine and Vettel had to jump out of the car immediately. The problem, related to the power unit, meant that the German could not even participate in the second free practice, so his day ended with only 18 laps in his pocket, a sum that contrasts with the 52 laps of his partner , Lance Stroll.

However, the controversial scene of the day occurred between the two free practice sessions. Sebastian, after helping the marshals to extinguish the fire in his car to avoid damaging any components, waited until the end of the session to return to the pits. He was going to do it together with a commissioner on a scooter, but the German asked him to drive it himself.

The commissioner gave Vettel permission to return to the pit lane once practice was over, and according to the pilot, he told him that he could do it on the track itself, despite the fact that the FIA prohibits anyone from entering the track until after five minutes after the end of the session.

“Obviously we had a problem and there was a bit of smoke. I felt like I was losing power,” Vettel said. “I had to stop on track and did my best to limit the damage and get the car out as soon as possible,” Vettel explained after the session, according to Autosport.

“I asked (the stewards) if I could go back (to the pits) once I was sure there would be no fire again. But anyway, the session was already over. I asked if someone would come for me and then a person appeared with a scooter and told me to get on. I asked him if I could drive it and he gave it to me,” he explains.

Beyond the violation of that rule, Vettel returned to the pits in a somewhat peculiar way, with his helmet half-placed, not fastened, and raising his hands (sometimes both) to greet the public attending the Albert Park Circuit . It was not a particularly ‘safe’ or exemplary scene, despite being on a closed circuit.
