From February 23 to 26, 2023, the 959 Paris-Dakar will be on display at the Retro Classics vintage car show in Stuttgart. It will be as part of the special exhibition “75 years of Porsche sports cars”, an exhibition that is worth seeing. The unit that will be on display has been restored, and a recording team accompanied Porsche throughout the restoration process to make the documentary “959 Paris-Dakar”.
The brand still has the three Zuffenhausen Porsche 959s from that 1986 rally. “The winning car remains intact, we keep it in a time capsule, so to speak, and let the traces of the rally remain on it as long as possible” said Kuno Werner, workshop manager at the Porsche Museum.
“In the year of the premiere we got the victory and all our cars reached the finish line; in the following edition, none of the three cars managed to finish the race. That was devastating, but we managed to get up and promised that we would return. In 1986 it worked again: we did a one-two and all three cars went all the way,” said Peter Falk, Porsche’s director of competition at the time.
“The 959 Paris-Dakar was once a technological laboratory and that is why it is exciting to restore it. In 1986, his arrival was a challenge for the automobile industry; Today, on the other hand, we are the ones who live the challenge”, said Uwe Makrutzki, director of Factory Restoration at Porsche Classic, on this occasion.
