Volkswagen ID.5: Like the ID.4, but more… emotional

The Volkswagen family of electric cars continues to grow. After the ID.3 came the ID.4 and now it’s time for – yes, it was easy to imagine – the ID.5. The German brand took us to Austria, its neighboring country, to give us the opportunity to drive it for the first time; and in this video we tell you everything about the new Volkswagen ID.5:

To give you a clear idea of what type of car Volkswagen ID.5 is, its concept is identical to that of its closest relative, the Skoda Enyaq Coupé, with which it also shares a platform and technology. And if the Czech model is the “SUV coupe version” of the Skoda Enyaq, the German is the “SUV coupe version” of the Volkswagen ID.4. The fact is that the ID.5 is not just an SUV and certainly not a coupe either; but yes it is, it is an alternative to the ID.4 whose body has a clear drop roof and, with it, a more “dynamic” image.

The Volkswagen ID.5 is the “coupe-style” alternative to its range brother, the ID.4.

However, their external dimensions are practically the same. The ID.5 replicates the figures for length (4.60 meters), wheelbase (2.77 m) and width (1.85 m), and is only distinguished by its overall height; although in reality it is only 3 cm lower than the ID.4 at the highest point of its bodywork (it is 1.61 m high). Therefore, the differences are minimal if we stick to the measurements, but they become very evident when we talk about morphology.

“Sporty” aesthetics that do not drag compromises

Contrary to what it might seem, its load capacity is practically the same.

Surprisingly, the boot capacity is even a little higher than that of the ID.4, since we have 549 liters (6 more) with all five seats in use. On the other hand, if we lower the rear seatbacks, we will be left with 14 liters less maximum capacity (1,561 liters).

As expected, the difference with the rear row of seats of an ID.4 is in the free height to the ceiling; although in reality it is not that much: we have only lost 1.2 cm, so it is a little closer to the head but not too much. And that’s because when the roof really tilts, it does so right behind.

The driving position recovers all the good and the not so good that we have already seen in the ID.4.

Where we will find that ID.4 and ID.5 are practically the same will be when we sit in the driver’s seat, where the color combinations and some decorative details hardly change. It retains the same digital mini-instrument panel with integrated gear selector, as well as the wonderful 12” central touch screen, which gives access to the latest version of the infotainment system. Unfortunately, the overall quality impression is about the same; and from a brand with prices like those of Volkswagen, something more can be expected.

500 km of autonomy and rear-wheel drive (or total)

Its battery of 77 kWh of useful capacity allows, in theory, to travel around 500 kilometers.

At the time of publishing this article, the offer of motors and batteries for the ID.5 in the Spanish market is the same as that offered by the ID.4. All variants share the same lithium-ion battery with liquid cooling and 77 kWh of net capacity, whose autonomy of use is around 500 km in the WLTP mixed cycle depending on the chosen engine.

In this section, we can opt for a single electric motor located on the rear axle -and intended to move it-; or by a scheme with two propellers, one for each axis. The rear-wheel drive versions are called Pro (with a 128 kW motor, equivalent to 174 CV) and Pro Performance (with 150 kW, that is, 204 CV). The model with two engines is called GTX and, in addition to its 220 kW of power (299 hp), it stands out from the rest by offering four-wheel drive.

The GTX variant, with its almost 300 horsepower and all-wheel drive, is the most attractive – and expensive -.

Don’t miss the video that accompanies this article! In it we explain in greater detail the main characteristics of the Volkswagen ID.5 as well as, of course, our first impressions of driving -specifically with the GTX version, the most performance variant, capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds-.
