Voluntary ITV: what it is and why experts recommend passing it before buying a used car

We are familiar with terms such as periodic ITV (which is carried out in accordance with official deadlines) and non-periodic ITV (to obtain a duplicate of the inspection card or after carrying out some important reform, for example). Today we tell you what the voluntary ITV is and why it is advisable to pass it before buying a used car.

Voluntary ITV: deadlines, tests, prices…

The voluntary ITV is a type of technical inspection that can be complete (if requested by the interested party), such as the one that is carried out on a mandatory and periodic basis for all vehicles, or partial. In the latter case, only the correct operation of a specific element or system of the vehicle is checked, for example, the brakes, steering or emissions.

If any serious or very serious defect is detected, it must be corrected and returned to the ITV station to verify that it has been corrected.

As it is the user who requests the inspection on his own initiative, this type of inspection does not have a periodicity; neither does it affect the expiration date of the mandatory ITV (that is, you will have to pass it when the inspection card indicates even if you have passed the voluntary one months before).

Regarding the price of the voluntary ITV, it is usually somewhat lower than that of a conventional ITV.

When is it advisable to request a voluntary ITV

The AECA-ITV experts explain that the voluntary ITV can also be of great help when purchasing a second-hand vehicle. “It is a tool that allows the buyer to assure himself that the car he is going to acquire is in good condition and allows the seller to offer a guarantee of the proper functioning of the vehicle,” they say.

Experts in mechanics remember that sometimes used vehicles can present complex problems that are not detected with the naked eye and that can only be seen through a complete check such as the one carried out by ITV stations, which includes: the engine, the lighting , brakes, gas emissions, among other systems.

Through this type of inspection, it can be detected, for example, if the vehicle has any non-legalized reform”, they add.
