The current Canon Digital has been with us since 2017, and since then we have been paying for a long list of devices. This fee is paid as compensation to authors for private copies of their works, and it appears to be close to going up on some specific devices. A new Royal Decree is on its way, and this would change the Digital Canon for some products such as mobile phones and tablets. We tell you more in this article.
This rise of Canon Digital, as we say, will not be the same for all devices, since in fact there will be some devices for which you will have to pay less for Canon Digital. This new Royal Decree is still a draft, so there is still some time before we see it active.
Canon Digital triples for mobile
The Vozpópuli media has had access to the draft of this Royal Decree, so we can already give you some advance of what it would be like if it does not change before it begins to be applied. The devices that come out worse off with this new Digital Canon would undoubtedly be mobile phones, which will see how the Canon for each marketed phone will become 3.75 euros. This amount of money will be added to the phone bill when the user buys it, so he will be responsible for paying it, not the manufacturer.
Although it may seem that it is a “small” figure, we must bear in mind that the current Canon for mobile phones is only 1.10 euros, so with the new Royal Decree we will see how the Canon for these will be multiplied by more three times its current amount. This increase will not be only for mobile phones, since it will also affect tablets. Of course, it will do so to a lesser extent: from 3.15 euros, which is the current rate, it will become 3.75 euros in the event that the Royal Decree is approved as its draft currently stands.
Not all will be uploaded for Canon Digital. Some products, such as computers, will see the Canon drop slightly compared to how it currently is. From being currently the Canon 5.45 euros it will have an amount of 5.33 euros.
Other devices will see how your Canon remains unchanged. Multifunction printers, for example, will continue to have a rate of 5.25 euros per unit, as stated in the current Canon Digital that we have with us. The same will happen with non-rewritable discs, which will continue to bear a rate of 0.08 euros per unit. We will also see how USB sticks will maintain the same rate, this being 0.24 euros per unit.
The entities behind Canon Digital
The negotiations for this new Digital Canon have had as one of its parties the Association for the Development of Intellectual Property (or ADEPI), an entity that integrates most of the rights management entities in Spain. (AIE, AISGE, CEDRO, AMA or EGEDA). In the other part of the negotiations, the Spanish digital technology industry has positioned itself, represented by AMETIC, a conglomerate with companies such as Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi or Sony, among many others.
These negotiations between both entities have seen how AMETIC sought a lower rate, while ADEPI defended just the opposite. All these negotiations have taken place under the watchful eye of the Government, which will have the last word on the text.
